Error in Table
The Research Letter titled, “Medical Specialties of Clinicians Providing Mechanical Thrombectomy to Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke in the United States,” published in the April 2018 print issue included an error in the Table that presented the data for neurosurgeons in the row labeled “Neurology,” and the data for neurologists in the row labeled “Neurosurgery.” This included indicating that 110 thrombectomies were performed by neurosurgeons and 91 by neurologists. The Table has been corrected and now matches the data present in the main text of the article: 91 thrombectomies performed by neurosurgeons an d...

Carotid endarterectomy in patients with recurrent symptoms associated with an ipsilateral carotid artery near occlusion with full collapse
ConclusionIn patients with RSNOFC, CEA may be considered a potential treatment option. Although procedural risks in this small subgroup may be higher as compared to patients with low-to-moderate risk anatomy, this risk may outbalance the natural course.

Racial Difference in Cerebral Microbleed Burden Among a Patient Population in the Mid-South United States
Although intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is more common among African-Americans, data on the burden of cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) among different races is limited. The purpose of this study is to compare the number, associated factors, and topography of CMBs between African-American and Caucasian populations in the Mid-South United States.

Stroke as a presenting sign of systemic occult cancer
Epilepsy is a common neurologic disorder which affects about 1% of the U.S. population [1]. Most new cases of epilepsy occur in the elderly, with an annual incidence rate of 240 per 100,000 in people aged 65 and older in the United States [1]. Among patients with new-onset epilepsy, almost 50% of the causes can be explained by an underlying etiology, such as vascular diseases, tumors or metabolic disorders [2]. Around 30-40% of new epilepsy cases among the elderly are accounted for by previous cerebrovascular hemorrhages or ischemic accidents.

ƒPublication trends in transcranial magnetic stimulation: a 30-year panorama
ConclusionThis study implemented a systematic, bibliometric approach to quantitively assess the breadth of the TMS literature base and identify temporal publication and authorship trends. Drawing on these insights may aid understanding of historical progress in TMS over the last 30 years and help identify into unmet needs and opportunities to improve scientific and publishing practices to contribute to the future health of the field. These findings are likely to be relevant to researchers, clinicians, funders, industry collaborators and other stakeholders.

Healthcare Economics of Hydrocephalus After Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage in the United States
AbstractHydrocephalus is one of the most common sequelae after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH), and it is a large contributor to the condition ’s high rates of readmission and mortality. Our objective was to quantify the healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) and health economic burden incurred by the US health system due to post-aSAH hydrocephalus. The Truven Health MarketScan® Research database was used to retrospectively quantify the prevalence and HCRU associated with hydrocephalus in aSAH patients undergoing surgical clipping or endovascular coiling from 2008 to 2015. Multivariable longitudinal analysis w...

Endovascular Thrombolysis or Thrombectomy for Cerebral Venous Thrombosis: Study of Nationwide Inpatient Sample 2004-2014
In this study, we analyze Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) data to evaluate the safety and efficacy of endovascular therapy (ET) versus medical management in CVT. We also examined the yearly trends of ET utilization in the United States. Methods: International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification codes were utilized to identify CVT patients who received ET.

Pre-injury Comorbidities Are Associated With Functional Impairment and Post-concussive Symptoms at 3- and 6-Months After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: A TRACK-TBI Study
Conclusions: Pre-injury psychiatric and pre-injury headache/migraine symptoms are risk factors for worse functional and post-concussive outcomes at 3- and 6-months post-mTBI. mTBI patients presenting to acute care should be evaluated for psychiatric and headache/migraine history, with lower thresholds for providing TBI education/resources, surveillance, and follow-up/referrals. Clinical Trial Registration: www.ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier NCT01565551. Introduction Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. In 2013 ~2.8 million TBI cases were recorded an...

Recent Trends in Electively Treated Unruptured Intracranial Aneurysms
Background and Purpose: To determine recent treatment and outcome trends in patients undergoing elective surgical clipping (SC) or endovascular therapy (EVT) for unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIAs) in the United States. Methods: Data were extracted and analyzed from the National Inpatient Sample, Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality for all patients admitted for elective EVT or SC of UIAs between 2011 and 2014. Treatment trends, in-hospital mortality, complication rates, length of stay (LOS) and total hospital costs were evaluated and analyzed.

The Young Male Syndrome —An Analysis of Sex, Age, Risk Taking and Mortality in Patients With Severe Traumatic Brain Injuries
Conclusion The willingness of young males to engage in dangerous situations might be adaptive in terms of fitness maximization. Nonetheless, for some individuals this intense sexual competition can be detrimental to health. The correspondence between the age distribution of the reproductively most active population and those suffering sTBI only partially supports the evolutionary hypothesis about risk-taking behavior. The prevalence of higher external mortality rates of young males, on the other hand, was not present in our data at all, nor did we find any support for the assumption that sTBI acquired from riskier behavio...
