Differential associations between pre-diabetes, diabetes and stroke occurrence among West Africans
CONCLUSION: Pre-DM is strongly and independently associated with stroke in Africans. Improving glycemic control through screening, healthy lifestyle and pharmacotherapy at a population level may be strategic in reducing the rising burden of stroke in Africa.PMID:36194925 | DOI:10.1016/j.jstrokecerebrovasdis.2022.106805

Promise of Physiological Profiling to Prevent Stroke in People of African Ancestry: Prototyping Ghana
AbstractPurpose of ReviewWorldwide, compared to other racial/ethnic groups, individuals of African ancestry have an excessively higher burden of hypertension-related morbidities, especially stroke. Identifying modifiable biological targets that contribute to these disparities could improve global stroke outcomes. In this scoping review, we discuss how pathological perturbations in the renin –angiotensin–aldosterone pathways could be harnessed via physiological profiling for the purposes of improving blood pressure control for stroke prevention among people of African ancestry.Recent FindingsTranscontinental comparative...

Nigeria: A Beep in Time Could Save a Life
[Nigeria Health Watch] Enoh Richard's doctor is reducing the number of pills she takes daily to keep her blood sugar under a healthy level. Previously, she was on 2,000mg of a blood sugar-controlling drug, 10mg of another to reduce the risk of heart failure or stroke, five units of insulin and she checked her blood sugar every day. After signing up on an app and starting a tailored diet, exercise and care plan, she now checks her blood sugar every other day. "It has stayed within 4.5% to 4.7%," she says. Bleeding events in the emergency department with warfarin versus novel oral anticoagulants: A five-year analysis
Conclusion: Our findings indicate that rates of major and minor bleeding complications in patients taking NOACs are similar to those in patients taking warfarin. While warfarin was associated with fewer complications than NOACs in terms of gastrointestinal bleeding, the risk of intracranial bleeding, was similar between the groups.

Evaluation of neurology consultations in a COVID-19 pandemic hospital, A retrospective study
Conclusion: The change in consciousness was the reason in more than half of the patients who requested neurology consultation during COVID-19 follow-up. Impaired consciousness in a patient with COVID-19 may indicate a poor prognosis. If the studies planned in the near future can shed light on the cause of the unconsciousness developing in COVID-19, it will be promising in terms of treatment plans to reduce mortality.

Capacity-Building for Stroke Genomic Research Data Collection: The African Neurobiobank Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications Project Experience
Conclusion: Capacity-building is a necessary step toward ELSI-related genomic research implementation in African countries where scholarship of ELSI of genomics research is emerging. Our findings may be useful to the design and implementation of ELSI-GGR projects in other African countries.PMID:35759418 | DOI:10.1089/bio.2021.0144
