Global cognitive performance at 4-year follow-up in individuals with atrial fibrillation —findings from The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing
ConclusionIndividuals with AF were more likely to show an increase in rate of errors between waves 1 and 3 (4-year follow-up period) in the TILDA population; however, results were not significant when controlling for age, sex and level of education.

Airway clearance practice in people with bronchiectasis: A Northern Ireland (NI) survey

On a busy opening day of UNISON’s women’s conference – held virtually because of the continuing pandemic – delegates worked hard to ensure they have every chance of getting through the entire agenda.
Irene Graham from Northern Ireland told delegates about that region’s relaunch of the Feminist Recover Plan, which highlights the effects of both the pandemic and Brexit on women.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation-related infective endocarditis: experience from an Irish tertiary referral centre
ConclusionsThis Irish cohort of TAVI-IE exhibited a similar incidence and time to presentation compared to prior international registries; however, the 1-year mortality rate was comparatively lower. The need for rigorous dental clearance pre-TAVI and maintenance of dental health post-TAVI is underscored by the high prevalence of oral streptococcus species in this cohort.

188 Structural differences in access to neurological healthcare in Northern Ireland: a neurodisparity index
Disparities in management of neurological patients should be minimal in a universal healthcare system. Northern Ireland has one neuroscience centre but no neurology centres. We have devised an easily- applied neurodisparity index (NDI) to measure population equity of neurological healthcare. NDI=number of patients managed per 105 population per Trust/number of patients managed per 105 population of the tertiary centre Trust. NDIs <0.75 and >1.25 were arbitrarily designated as neurodisparities.

Predicted cardiac and second cancer risks for patients undergoing VMAT for mediastinal Hodgkin lymphoma
ConclusionFor patients with mediastinal lymphoma excess mortality risks from CVD and second cancers remain clinically significant despite contemporary chemotherapy and photon-RT. Efforts to reduce the toxicity of combined modality treatment, for example, using DIBH, reduced margins and advanced RT, e.g. proton beam therapy, should be continued to further reduce potentially fatal treatment effects.
