Suprasternal Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement in Patients With Marginal Femoral Access
Conclusions These data demonstrate the early clinical feasibility of suprasternal transcatheter aortic valve replacement. Key advantages of this approach include direct access to the innominate artery and ascending aorta, precise sheath control, and confident arterial closure. Additional experience is warranted to confirm these favorable results.

Edwards launches US pivotal Centera self-expanding TAVR study
Edwards Lifesciences (NYSE:EW) said yesterday it launched a U.S.-based pivotal trial of its self-expanding Centera transcatheter aortic valve, exploring its use in treating severe symptomatic aortic stenosis in intermediate risk patients. The Centera valve is designed to be repositionable and retrievable, and is delivered through the use of a 14 French motorized delivery system in which the valve is pre-attached to the mechanism for quick preparation, the Edwards said. The Irvine, Calif.-based company said it hopes to enroll approximately 1,000 patients in the trial, which will include a bicuspid registry. The endpoint fo...

Obesity and cardiovascular risk in an oncology day ward population
ConclusionsWe observed similar or lower rates of obesity and CV risk factors in this cohort compared to the general adult Irish population. The average predicted risk of developing CV disease in this grp was moderate to high. This can have significant future implications with regard to cancer survivorship, disease recurrence and suitability for further oncological treatments.

Isolation of Antimicrobial Compounds From Cnestis ferruginea Vahl ex. DC (Connaraceae) Leaves Through Bioassay-Guided Fractionation
Conclusion In conclusion, aqueous extracts of C. ferruginea leaves showed antimicrobial activity due to the presence of hydroquinone and caffeic acid methyl ester. This supports its traditional use for infections and confirmed that the active molecules are water-soluble. Author Contributions KK, SP, LVP, and WL conceived and designed the experiments. SP, KK, M-RY, and J-GL performed the experiments. SP, LVP, WL, M-RY, J-GL, and Z-HJ analyzed the data. WL and Z-HJ contributed reagents, materials, and analysis tools. KK, SP, WL, M-RY, Z-HJ, and LVP contributed to the writing of the manuscript. All authors contributed to m...

Atrial Transcriptional Profiles of Molecular Targets Mediating Electrophysiological Function in Aging and Pgc-1 β Deficient Murine Hearts
Conclusion: These findings limit the possible roles of gene transcriptional changes in previously reported age-dependent pro-arrhythmic electrophysiologial changes observed in Pgc-1β-/- atria to an altered Ca2+-ATPase (Atp2a2) expression. This directly parallels previously reported arrhythmic mechanism associated with p21-activated kinase type 1 deficiency. This could add to contributions from the direct physiological outcomes of mitochondrial dysfunction, whether through reactive oxygen species (ROS) production or altered Ca2+ homeostasis. Introduction Atrial arrhythmias constitute a major public health pro...

F2. White Matter Lesions are Common in Midlife and Associated With Cognitive Decline
As the brain ages, it begins to accrue small microbleeds and lesions in white matter that are readily detectable as white matter hyperintensities (WMH) using FLAIR MRI. Accumulation of WMH is associated with multiple dementia risk factors, including age, hypertension, stroke, and brain atrophy. Longitudinal studies have reported that the spread of WMH coincides with age-related cognitive decline in general populations of older adults. However, the age at which WMH begin to signal cognitive deficits is still unclear.
