Associations of WWC1 variants with Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia among rural older adults in China: A population-based study
Neurobiol Aging. 2023 Jan 8:S0197-4580(23)00003-9. doi: 10.1016/j.neurobiolaging.2023.01.003. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe sought to examine the associations of common WWC1 variants with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD) among rural-dwelling older adults in China. This population-based study used data from the baseline assessments (March -September 2018) of MIND-China. AD and VaD were diagnosed following the international criteria. Of the 5455 participants (age≥60 years, 57.27% women), 182 were diagnosed with AD and 88 with VaD. Logistic regression analysis suggested that WWC1 rs17070145 C allele (...

A heterozygous mutation in NOTCH3 in a Chinese family with CADASIL
Conclusion: We identified a known CADASIL-causing mutation NOTCH3 (c.397C>T, p.Arg133Cys) in a Chinese family. The clinical manifestations of mutation carriers in this family are highly heterogeneous, which is likely a common feature for the etiology of different mutations in CADASIL. Molecular genetic analyses are critical for accurate diagnosis, as well as the provision of genetic counselling for CADASIL.

Bibliometric review of 1992 –2022 publications on acupuncture for cognitive impairment
ConclusionThis research provides valuable information for the study of acupuncture. Diseases focus on mild cognitive impairment (MCI), Alzheimer's disease (AD), and vascular dementia (VaD). Tauopathies with hyperphosphorylation of Tau protein as the main lesions also need to be paid attention to. The development of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) will better explain the therapeutic effect of acupuncture treatment. The effect of acupuncture on a single point is more convincing, and acupuncture on Baihui (GV20) may be needed in the future. Finally, the implementation of high-quality multicenter randomized contro...

Blood pressure control and risk of post-stroke dementia among the elderly: A population-based screening study
ConclusionsThe crude prevalence of PSD among stroke survivors aged ≥65 years was 17.8% at community level. In addition to lower education level and older age, poorly-controlled blood pressure was also an independent risk factor for PSD among the elderly, which is amenable to intervention. Therefore, it is essential to control blood pressure to reduce PSD incidence.

Emerging Trends and Hotspots in Tai Chi Fall Prevention: Analysis and Visualization
This study has identified the core countries are the United States, China, Australia, and England, which are also the origins of the core institutions. Besides this, we also have found two large research groups led by Li and Sherrington. Moreover, the result has revealed that J Aging Phys Act and J Am Geriatr Soc are the primary journals. Geriatrics and gerontology, sport sciences, rehabilitation, and gerontology are the leading categories. Furthermore, one of the more important findings to come out in this study are that "elderly", "Parkinson's disease", "vestibular rehabilitation", "frail patient", and "community fall pr...

Effectiveness of acupuncture for patients with vascular dementia: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Acupuncture is probably helpful in vascular stroke, but strong supportive data are not yet available. Acupuncture should be used cautiously, owing to the analysis of this study based on low to moderate evidence. Further high-quality, large-scale RCTs should be conducted.PMID:35843473 | DOI:10.1016/j.ctim.2022.102857

Antithrombotic therapy to prevent cognitive decline in people with small vessel disease on neuroimaging but without dementia
CONCLUSIONS: We found no convincing evidence to suggest any clinically relevant cognitive benefit of using antithrombotic therapy in addition to standard treatment in people with cerebral small vessel disease but without dementia, but there may be an increased bleeding risk with this approach. There was marked heterogeneity across the trials and the certainty of the evidence was generally poor.PMID:35833913 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD012269.pub2

Why Acupuncture Is Going Mainstream in Medicine
When the opioid addiction crisis began to surge in the U.S. about a decade ago, Dr. Medhat Mikhael spent a lot of time talking to his patients about other ways to heal pain besides opioids, from other types of medications to alternative treatments. As a pain management specialist at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, Calif., he didn’t anticipate leaving behind the short-term use of opioids altogether, since they work so well for post-surgical pain. But he wanted to recommend a remedy that was safer and still effective. That turned out to be acupuncture. “Like any treatment, acupuncture...

Visualization and Analysis of the Mapping Knowledge Domain of Acupuncture and Central Nervous System Cell Apoptosis
Evid Based Complement Alternat Med. 2022 Apr 14;2022:1751702. doi: 10.1155/2022/1751702. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTChinese acupuncture therapy has demonstrated good clinical effects on neurological diseases and is widely used internationally. In the past 20 years, an increasing number of researchers around the world have devoted themselves to the study of the effect and mechanism of acupuncture for the treatment of central nervous system cell apoptosis. To discover the current research status of acupuncture-induced antiapoptosis in the central nervous system, we used the method of scientometric research and data visualizati...
