Current status of oral anticoagulant adherence in Japanese patients with atrial fibrillation: A claims database analysis
CONCLUSION: In a real-world Japanese claim data analysis, about 70% of patients under DOAC showed persistence with anticoagulation therapy at 3 years. High adherence to DOACs assessed by PDC (over 90%) persisted to 3 years regardless of the types of DOACs.PMID:33663881 | DOI:10.1016/j.jjcc.2021.02.007

Basilar artery occlusion presenting as sudden bilateral deafness: a case report
ConclusionsWhen hearing loss is due to vertebrobasilar occlusive disease, the prognosis is very poor. We suggest that vertebrobasilar stroke be suspected in patients with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss who present with risk factors for stroke such as atrial fibrillation and other neurologic signs.

Serum High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein Levels and the Development of Atrial Fibrillation in a General Japanese Population - The Hisayama Study
CONCLUSIONS: The study findings suggest that elevated serum hs-CRP levels are an independent risk factor for the development of AF in a general Japanese population.PMID:33597325 | DOI:10.1253/circj.CJ-20-0751

Major adverse cardiovascular events and mortality after catheter ablation in Japanese patients with atrial fibrillation: The Fushimi AF Registry
ConclusionCA was associated with lower incidences of MACE and all-cause mortality for patients with AF as compared with those who received drug therapy. The most common event of MACE in patients who underwent CA was heart failure hospitalization.Clinical trial registrationURL:http://www.umin.ac.jp/ctr/index.htmUnique identifierUMIN000005834.

Metabolically Healthy Obesity and the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease in the General Population - Analysis of a Nationwide Epidemiological Database.
CONCLUSIONS: Among individuals with no metabolic disorders, MHO alone did not significantly increase the subsequent CVD risk. However, individuals with comorbid MHO and abdominal obesity had a higher risk of myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation, suggesting the prognostic importance of abdominal obesity in subjects with MHO. Impact of Frailty on Bleeding Events Related to Anticoagulation Therapy in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation.
CONCLUSIONS: Frailty is associated with increased bleeding events related to anticoagulant therapy in patients previously hospitalized with AF. Greater care should be taken with patients with a CHS frailty index ≥2. PMID: 33504742 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Clinical outcomes according to dose reduction criteria of apixaban in Japanese elderly patients with atrial fibrillation: J-ELD AF Registry subanalysis
AbstractDose reduction of apixaban is applied in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients fulfilling  ≥ 2 of the following criteria: (1) age ≥ 80 years, (2) body weight ≤ 60 kg and (3) serum creatinine ≥ 1.5 mg/dL. However, the clinical significance of each criterion remains unclear. The J-ELD AF Registry is a prospective observational study of elderly (≥ 75 years) J apanese AF patients receiving on-label dose of apixaban. In patients receiving the standard dose (5 mg bid,n = 1243), the incidence rates (% per patient-year) of stroke or systemic embolism in those fulfilling none [n = 516] o...

Patients with acute myocardial infarction and atrial fibrillation: association of anemia with risk of in-hospital bleeding, stroke and other death causes.
Conclusions: In the Chinese in-hospital AMI and AF cohort, anemia was shown to be associated with increased risk of any bleeding, minor bleeding, gastrointestinal bleeding and other death causes, but not the risk of stroke or/and SE. Clinical outcomes of ablation versus non-ablation therapy for atrial fibrillation in Japan: analysis of pooled data from the AF Frontier Ablation Registry and SAKURA AF Registry
AbstractWhether ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF) is, in terms of clinical outcomes, beneficial for Japanese patients has not been clarified. Drawing data from 2 Japanese AF registries (AF Frontier Ablation Registry and SAKURA AF Registry), we compared the incidence of clinically relevant events (CREs), including stroke/transient ischemic attack (TIA), major bleeding, cardiovascular events, and death, between patients who underwent ablation (n = 3451) and those who did not (n = 2930). We also compared propensity-score matched patients (n = 1414 in each group). In propensity-scored patients who underwent abl...

A Comparative Prospective Observational Study on the Use of Direct Oral Anticoagulants after Cardiac Surgery for the Management of Atrial Fibrillation.
CONCLUSION: DOAC as anticoagulation therapy for the early intervention of POAF following cardiac surgery is associated with a low incidence of major bleeding; a favorable safety profile and excellent efficacy were demonstrated for DOAC. Furthermore, our results indicate that the safety and efficacy of apixaban and edoxaban are better than rivaroxaban. PMID: 33208579 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Impact of atrial fibrillation on the risk of ischemic stroke in patients on hemodialysis: BOREAS-HD3 Study
ConclusionPresent analyses using comprehensive adjustment for multiple confounders, including prior history of ischemic stroke, indicated that AF independently increases the risk of new-onset of ischemic stroke by more than twofold in Japanese HD patients.

Clinical Outcomes of Off-Label Underdosing of Direct Oral Anticoagulants After Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation.
In conclusion, the clinical adverse event rates for patients on an off-label under-dose DOAC regimen after ablation, predicated on careful patient evaluations, was not high as seen with that of patients on a standard DOAC dosing regimen. PMID: 33191353 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
