Long-term oral anticoagulation for atrial fibrillation in low and middle income countries
Discussions regarding oral anticoagulation (OAC) use in low and middle income countries (LMICs) have historicallybeendominated by severallong-held beliefs. The first is that the quality of vitamin K antagonist (VKA) based anticoagulation is poor in these countries. The veracity of this assumption is supported by a large number of studies documenting both lower prescription of OACs, and a lower proportion of international normalised ratio (INR) values in the therapeutic range.1The second is that a large proportion of patients receiving OAC in LMICs have atrial fibrillation (AF) related to valvular heart disease, and rheumat...

Risk factors for and impact of poststroke pneumonia in patients with acute ischemic stroke
Poststroke pneumonia (PSP) is a common complication of stroke and an important cause of death following stroke. However, the treatment of PSP remains inadequate due to severe impairment to the respiratory system by PSP. Thus, it is crucial to focus on preventing PSP to improve the prognosis of patients with stroke. This prospective single-center Cohort study aimed to investigate the risk factors for pulmonary infection following an ischemic stroke and identify whether PSP significantly influences the prognosis of patients after stroke. Altogether, 451 patients who were treated for acute ischemic stroke in the First A...

Genes, Vol. 12, Pages 408: KLF15 Loss-of-Function Mutation Underlying Atrial Fibrillation as well as Ventricular Arrhythmias and Cardiomyopathy
Yang Min Zhang Atrial fibrillation (AF) represents the most common type of clinical cardiac arrhythmia and substantially increases the risks of cerebral stroke, heart failure and death. Accumulating evidence has convincingly demonstrated the strong genetic basis of AF, and an increasing number of pathogenic variations in over 50 genes have been causally linked to AF. Nevertheless, AF is of pronounced genetic heterogeneity, and the genetic determinants underpinning AF in most patients remain obscure. In the current investigation, a Chinese pedigree with AF as well as ventricular arrhythmias and hypertrophic cardiomyo...

Risks of Ischemic Stroke/Transient Ischemic Attack Based on CHA < sub > 2 < /sub > DS < sub > 2 < /sub > -VASc Scores in Non-Atrial Fibrillation Chinese Patients with Sinus Rhythm
This study aims to evaluate the incidence of ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) based on CHA2DS2-VASc scores in non-AF Chinese patients with sinus rhythm. We used health check-up data of 101,510 participants from the Kailuan Cohort Study. Participants' risk levels were defined by their CHA2DS2-VASc scores (range 0-3): Men with scores of 0, 1, or ≥ 2 and women with scores of 1, 2, or ≥ 3 were considered at low, intermediate, or high risk, respectively. Cox proportional hazards model was used to assess the association between the CHA2DS2-VASc-determined risk and the incidence of ischemic stroke/TIA.The mea...

A Novel Creatinine-Based Equation to Estimate Glomerular Filtration Rate in Chinese Population With Chronic Kidney Disease: Implications for DOACs Dosing in Atrial Fibrillation Patients
Conclusion: Xiangya-s equation provides more accurate GFR estimates in Chinese CKD patients who need consecutive monitoring of renal function, which may assist clinicians in choosing appropriate drug dosages.

The increased risk of atrial fibrillation in inflammatory arthritis: a systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies.
Conclusion: Patients with inflammatory arthritis have increased risk of AF, probably due to the underlying chronic inflammation. Although various confounders have been adjusted like medications use and comorbidities, the risk of AF is still significantly increased in inflammatory arthritis patients.
