Carotid Siphon Calcification Predicts the Symptomatic Progression in Branch Artery Disease With Intracranial Artery Stenosis
CONCLUSIONS: We found that carotid siphon calcification was associated with BAD and its computed tomography values could predict the symptomatic progression in patients with intracranial arterial atherosclerotic disease and BAD, indicating the important role of carotid calcification in B-type intracranial arterial atherosclerotic disease.REGISTRATION: URL: http://www.chictr.org.cn; Unique identifier: ChiCTR1800018315.PMID:35652332 | DOI:10.1161/ATVBAHA.122.317670

Relation of MRI Aortic Wall Area and Plaque to Incident Cardiovascular Events: The Framingham Heart Study
Conclusion In middle-aged community-dwelling adults, thoracic aortic wall area (AWA), plaque prevalence, and plaque volumes measured with MRI were independently associated with incident cardiovascular disease, with AWA associated in particular with stroke, and plaque associated with coronary heart disease. Clinical trial registration no. NCT00041418 © RSNA, 2022 Online supplemental material is available for this article. Plaque Evaluation by Ultrasound and Transcriptomics Reveals BCLAF1 as a Regulator of Smooth Muscle Cell Lipid Transdifferentiation in Atherosclerosis
CONCLUSIONS: Plaque echogenicity correlated with enrichment of distinct molecular pathways and identified BCLAF1, previously not described in atherosclerosis, as the most significant gene. Functionally, BCLAF1 seems necessary for survival and transdifferentiation of SMCs into a macrophage-like phenotype. The role of BCLAF1 in plaque vulnerability should be further evaluated.PMID:35321563 | DOI:10.1161/ATVBAHA.121.317018

Important recommendations of the German-Austrian S3 guidelines on management of extracranial carotid artery stenosis
CONCLUSION: Both CEA and CAS necessitate a critical evaluation of the indications and strict quality criteria. Future studies should evaluate even better selection criteria for an individual, optimal, conservative, operative or endovascular treatment.PMID:35318494 | DOI:10.1007/s00104-022-01622-x

Elevated Hemoglobin A1c Is Associated With Leaky Plaque Neovasculature as Detected by Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging
CONCLUSIONS: Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of carotid plaques suggested that plaque neovasculature in patients with diabetes is leaky, indicating enhanced capability of bringing blood constituents and facilitating extravasation of inflammatory cells, erythrocytes, and plasma proteins. Leaky plaque neovasculature correlated with hemoglobin A1c and may play a role in accelerated atherosclerosis progression in diabetes.PMID:35236109 | DOI:10.1161/ATVBAHA.121.317190
