Black/Hispanic Disparities in a Vulnerable Post-Stroke Home Care Population
This article examines socio-economic and health disparities in a diverse, hypertensive sample of 495 post-stroke Black, non-Hispanic and Hispanic home health patients at risk of a recurrent stroke due to elevated systolic blood pressure (SBP), defined as SBP  > 140 mmHg. The article, which analyzes cross-sectional data, focuses on correlates of patients’ SBP—the leading modifiable cause of stroke—and physical function—a key stroke sequela and indicator of post-stroke quality of life. Of the 495 participants, 69.7% were Black, non-Hispanic, and 3 0.3% Hispanic. Black participants had significantly higher mean ...

Oral health and cardiovascular disease risk factors and mortality of cerebral haemorrhage, cerebral infarction and unspecified stroke in elderly men: A prospective cohort study.
Conclusions: Oral health measured by number of tooth extractions >10 was an independent predictor for cerebral infarction in addition to age, HDL-C, hs-C-reactive protein and diabetes. The pattern of risk factors varied between the specific stroke diagnoses. PMID: 31814529 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Health risk factors in Australian Stroke Survivors: A latent class analysis
CONCLUSIONS: We identified two distinct health risk factor groups in our population. SO WHAT?: Future interventions may benefit from targeting the specific needs and requirements of people who have experienced stroke based on their distinct risk group. Alcohol consumption in post stroke populations requires further attention. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.PMID:36799087 | DOI:10.1002/hpja.706

Alcohol may increase risk of some types of stroke but not others
(BioMed Central) Light and moderate alcohol consumption of up to two drinks per day is associated with a lower risk of ischemic stroke but seems to have no effect on a person's risk of hemorrhagic stroke, according to a study published in the open access journal BMC Medicine. High-to-heavy drinking was found to be associated with increased risk of all stroke types.

Risks associated with the stroke predisposition at young age: facts and hypotheses in light of individualized predictive and preventive approach
AbstractStroke is one of the most devastating pathologies of the early twenty-first century demonstrating 1-month case-fatality rates ranging from 13 to 35% worldwide. Though the majority of cases do occur in individuals at an advanced age, a persistently increasing portion of the patient cohorts is affected early in life. Current studies provide alarming statistics for the incidence of “young” strokes including adolescents. Young stroke is a multifactorial disease involving genetic predisposition but also a number of modifiable factors, the synergic combination of which potentiates the risks. The article analyzes the ...
