Low value of inherited thrombophilia testing among patients with stroke or transient ischemic attack: A three-year retrospective study
Inherited thrombophilia testing in the acute inpatient setting is controversial and expensive, and rarely changes clinical management. We evaluated ordering patterns and results of inpatient inherited thrombophilia testing for patients who presented with an isolated acute ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) without concurrent venous thromboembolism.

Risk of recurrent ischemic stroke in patients with patent foramen ovale: The role of D-dimer
Paradoxical embolism under elevated thromboembolic conditions is known to be the primary mechanism of patent foramen ovale (PFO)-related stroke. We hypothesized that higher levels of D-dimer, a marker of thromboembolism, could increase the risk of stroke recurrence in patients with PFO.

Factors influencing real-life use of direct oral anticoagulants in patients with cerebral sinus and venous thrombosis
Cerebral sinus and venous thrombosis (CSVT) is a rare subtype of stroke caused by thrombosis of the dural sinuses and cerebral veins which comprises 0.5 –1% of all strokes1,2. The annual incidence ranges from 0.22 to 1.57 per 100,000, most often affecting young adults with a median age of 35 years3-5. Among CSVT patients, the female-to-male ratio is 3:1 and women are significantly younger compared to men6. This is largely due to the increased risk of CSVT associated with oral contraceptives, pregnancy and the puerperium3,7,8.

Risk of intracranial hemorrhage with direct oral anticoagulation versus low molecular weight heparin in the treatment of brain tumor-associated venous thromboembolism: A meta-analysis
Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are effective in treating cancer-related thrombosis and are superior to low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) in terms of efficacy. The effects of DOACs or LMWH on intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) remain uncertain in individuals with brain tumors. Ischemic stroke is a frequently occurring cerebrovascular disease (CVD) linked to high mortality, disability, and incidence rates, and the second factor causing global mortality41,3. There are two common sources of embolism in ischamic strokes: large artery atherosclerosis and small artery atherosclerosis. Ischemic stroke can be treated clinically with thrombolytic therapy4. Although ischemic stroke is treatable, post-cerebral ischemia blood reperfusion frequently induces inflammation, oxidative stress (OS) or additional unfavorable events that may exacerbate brain injury20,24.

Blood group and ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, and peripheral vascular disease: A meta-analysis of over 145,000 cases and 2,000,000 controls
The ABO blood groups have been associated with the pathophysiology of cardiovascular diseases through an influence on two important blood clotting proteins, von Willebrand factor (vWF) and factor FVIII levels (FVIII).1,2 These proteins circulate in the plasma as a complex and are vital in normal haemostasis.1 The highest levels of FVIII and VWF are seen in non-O blood groups. Studies suggest a relationship between non-O blood groups and an increased risk of venous thromboembolism and other thrombotic episodes.

An elderly case with late carotid stent thrombosis: possible role of antiphospholipid antibodies
The case study speculates that the antiphospholipid antibodies acquired during the follow-up period of carotid artery stenting may cause late stent thrombosis that is resistant to direct oral anticoagulants. Letter to the Editor Regarding ‘A neonatal case of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis with intrauterine onset after COVID19 infection during pregnancy: cause or coincidence?’
We read with interest the article by Ozdil et al. about a three day-old female neonate who was diagnosed with venous sinus thrombosis (VST) which was complicated by a subacute, partial ischemic stroke in the territory of the right middle cerebral artery.1 The age of the stroke was estimated at 14-28 days before birth.1 Because the mother suffered a mild coronvirus disease-19 (COVID-19) infection during the initial weeks of the third trimester (gestational weeks 27-30), VST in the fetus was causally related to the severe, acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus type-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection of the mother.

We are grateful to Josef Finsterer for his comments on our recent case regarding the possible association of maternal COVID-19 infection during pregnancy with a neonatal case of intrauterine cerebral sinus venous thrombosis (CSVT). In the letter to editor, he had raised several arguments against a causal relationship, however our case report focused on the plausability of maternal COVID-19 infection as a triggering factor for in utero onset of CVST.

Early high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin for refractory heparin-induced thrombocytopenia with stroke: Two case reports
Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is a drug reaction caused by anti-platelet factor 4 (PF4)/heparin antibodies of the IgG class that activate through Fc γ receptors on platelets and monocytes. They consume platelets and increase thrombin generation.1 HIT occurs 5 to 14 days after the start of heparinization.2 Management of HIT involves discontinuing heparin and switching to an alternative anticoagulant to prevent thrombosis and normalize platelet l evels.3–5 Autoimmune HIT (aHIT), which maintains marked heparin-independent platelet activation even after discontinuing heparin, has recently attracted attention.
