Prevalence of atrial septal defects and patent foramen ovale in a cohort of sudden cardiac death patients undergoing autopsy
CONCLUSIONS: The combined rate of PFO and ASD in a cohort of 517 patients undergoing autopsy was 7.9 %. None of these patients had experienced a cerebrovascular accident. This rate of PFOs appears lower than earlier reports and raises the possibility that the relative risk of an associated stroke could be higher than previously estimated.PMID:37734655 | DOI:10.1016/j.jjcc.2023.09.006

The foramen ovale is a flap valve moving blood from the right atrium into the left atrium directly and bypassing the high pressure pulmonary system. Atrial Septal Defects (ASD) are one of the most common congenital heart defects, and if unrepaired, increase the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) and atrial flutter (AFL). AF/AFL are linked to an increased risk of stroke and heart failure yet, it is not clear from existing data whether percutaneous ASD closure reduces the overall burden of AF/AFL and whether AF/AFL prevalence is impacted by closure age.

Percutaneous atrial shunt closure and the risk of recurrent ischemic stroke: A register-based, nationwide cohort study
Patent foramen ovale may cause paradoxical emboli1. Cryptogenic ischemic cerebrovascular events (stroke or transient ischemic attack) (CVE) accounts for about 25% of ischemic strokes.2,3 Transcatheter closure of atrial shunts, including atrial septal defects (ASD) and patent foramen ovale (PFO), was introduced in 1996.4-6 Initially,randomized studies failed7-9 but more recent randomized studies have shown superiority of interventional treatment, with 68 % reduction of recurrent stroke after transcatheter closure of PFO compared with medical treatment in patients with cryptogenic CVE.

Outcome of transcatheter atrial septal defect closure in a nationwide cohort
CONCLUSION: After TC closure of ASD, patients had a higher risk of new-onset atrial fibrillation and migraine than controls without ASD. Transcatheter versus surgical closure of atrial septal defect in adult patients with tricuspid regurgitation
Conclusions While TAP was effective for the treatment of significant TR, transcatheter ASD closure also significantly reduced TR as well. Transcatheter ASD closure may be considered an alternative treatment option in patients with moderate or severe TR.

Causes of ischemic stroke in young adults versus non-young adults: A multicenter hospital-based observational study
CONCLUSIONS: Certain embolic sources and uncommon causes may be etiologically important causes of ischemic stroke in young adults.
