Predictors of atrial fibrillation in patients with cryptogenic stroke (P6.294)
Conclusions:Consistent with prior studies, atrial fibrillation was found by outpatient monitoring in a notable percentage of cryptogenic stroke patients. Predictors of occult atrial fibrillation in our study population included PACs on EKG and higher TSH levels. Although an association between hyperthyroidism and atrial fibrillation has been well established, our results intriguingly suggest that hypothyroidism may be a predictive factor as well.Disclosure: Dr. Renati has nothing to disclose. Elevated thyroid autoantibodies and intracranial stenosis in stroke at an early age
ConclusionsThyroid autoantibodies may be associated with the presence of intracranial large artery stenosis in young stroke patients, potentially providing insight on immune pathogenesis of intracranial large artery stenosis.

Stroke in Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura Induced by Thyrotoxicosis: A Case Report
We describe the case of a 51-year-old Caucasian woman presenting a 24-hour story of sudden onset of dysarthria and left superior limb palsy. Four months before, she developed severe hyperthyroidism associated with petechiae, hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and schistocytes at blood film examination. Relapse of TTP in association with Grave disease was diagnosed. There are few reports describing association between Grave disease and TTP with only mild neurologic involvement. We described, to our knowledge, the first case of acute ischemic stroke secondary to thrombotic thrombocytopenic induced by thyrotoxicosis.

Incidence and mortality of myocardial infarction and stroke in patients with hyperthyroidism: A nationwide cohort study in Korea.
CONCLUSIONS: Hyperthyroidism is associated with increased risk of MI and ischemic stroke, independent of cardiovascular risk factors. This association is prominent in subjects with age ≥50 years, in females and in non-obese group. Hyperthyroidism did not significantly affect the mortality of cardiovascular events. Association of Hyperthyroidism and Thyroid Autoantibodies with Moyamoya Disease and Its Stroke Event: A Population-based Case-control Study and Meta-analysis.
Authors: Ahn JH, Jeon JP, Kim JE, Ha EJ, Cho WS, Park YJ, Cho NH, Choi HS, Kang HS, Son YJ, Bang JS, Oh CW Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the specific thyroid condition and thyroid autoantibodies in adult moyamoya disease (MMD) according to clinical presentation (ischemia vs. hemorrhage stroke). In addition, a meta-analysis was performed to reveal the association between adult MMD and elevated thyroid function, or autoantibodies. Prospectively collected data on 169 consecutive patients with MMD at a single institution were analyzed. Community-based controls matched for age and sex were selected f...

Nocturnal Desaturation is Associated With Atrial Fibrillation in Patients With Ischemic Stroke and Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Conclusions:Nocturnal hypoxia due to OSA is an independent predictor of AF in patients with subacute ischemic stroke. The use of overnight pulse oximeter to assess nocturnal hypoxia and predict paroxysmal AF in patients with cryptogenic stroke needs further evaluation.Commentary:A commentary on this article appears in this issue on page 667.Citation:Chen CY, Ho CH, Chen CL, Yu CC. Subclinical thyroid dysfunction and the risk of stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Abstract Subclinical thyroid dysfunction has been associated with coronary heart disease, but the risk of stroke is unclear. Our aim is to combine the evidence on the association between subclinical thyroid dysfunction and the risk of stroke in prospective cohort studies. We searched Medline (OvidSP), Embase, Web-of-Science, Pubmed Publisher, Cochrane and Google Scholar from inception to November 2013 using a cohort filter, but without language restriction or other limitations. Reference lists of articles were searched. Two independent reviewers screened articles according to pre-specified criteria and selected pr...

Subclinical Hyperthyroidism Could Predict Poor Outcomes in Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke Treated With Reperfusion Therapy
Conclusion: Subclinical hyperthyroidism may be independently associated with a poor prognosis at 3 months and unsuccessful reperfusion in patients with acute ischemic stroke receiving reperfusion therapy.

Thyroid function tests and early outcomes of acute ischemic stroke in older euthyroid patients.
Abstract Blood thyroid function tests (TFT) are routinely used to screen for thyroid disorders in several clinical settings. TFT on hospital admission may also be useful prognostic predictors of acute IS: according to recent evidence, poststroke outcome is better in patients with lower thyroid function and worse in those with higher thyroid function. However, previous reports are few and mostly compared patients with thyroid disorders to euthyroid patients. Thyroid disorders are known risk factors for cerebrovascular disease. However, hyperthyroidism is related to cardioembolic IS whereas hypothyroidism is related...

Stroke in a Young Man Secondary to Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation and Thyrotoxicosis: A Case Report
We report a case of a male patient with stroke caused by atrial fibrillation (AF) due to thyrotoxicosis. At hospital admission, he presented hypertension and AF. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed a right-side ischemic area. The thyrotoxicosis was confirmed by thyroid function and thyroid scintigraphy that showed goiter with diffuse hypercaptation. The patient was treated with tapazole and total thyroidectomy, and pathological findings suggested Graves ’ disease. Hyperthyroidism is associated with increased supraventricular ectopic activity in patients with a normal heart, and may be an important causal link between hy...
