Maternal Hemodynamics in Normal Pregnancies: Reference ranges and the Role of Maternal Characteristics.
CONCLUSION: Maternal hemodynamics are significantly influenced by maternal age, height and weight. We provide USCOM-1A(®) -specific reference ranges and calculator for SV, CO and SVR in uncomplicated pregnancies that correct for maternal age, height and weight. This will enable clinical application and comparison in both uncomplicated and pathological pregnancies. PMID: 28437601 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

More to Atherosclerosis than Stenosis: Symptomatic Carotid Artery with Intraplaque Hemorrhage (P5.285)
Conclusions:Current guidelines only address the degree of arterial narrowing when recommending carotid revascularization procedures for secondary stroke prevention. The most recent AHA-ASA guideline advises against revascularization procedures in less than 50% CA stenosis. These guidelines do not account for plaque morphology that may predict a high risk of early stroke recurrence as demonstrated by our patient.Disclosure: Dr. Rai has nothing to disclose. Effect of change in posture on maternal functional hemodynamics at 35 –37 weeks’ gestation
ConclusionsParadoxically, in late third trimester normal pregnancies both change from the supine to the sitting position and passive leg raising may result in increase in preload with consequent increase in cardiac index and stroke volume index and decrease in total peripheral resistance index. In pregnancies that develop PE or GH the effects of postural change on cardiovascular parameters are similar but less marked than in normotensive pregnancies.

Non ‐obstructive carotid atherosclerosis and patent foramen ovale in young adults with cryptogenic stroke
ConclusionsThis study demonstrates that NOCA is common in young adults with CS. NOCA is negatively associated with PFO. Detecting NOCA is an important component of stroke investigation in young adults.

Prevalence and distribution of calcified nodules in carotid arteries in correlation with clinical symptoms
ConclusionCN were found in 7.9% of arteries with carotid-plaques ≥2 mm by duplex-ultrasound; prevalence was significantly higher in symptomatic arteries with ≥30% stenosis compared to asymptomatic with<30% stenosis, suggesting that CN play a role in pathogenesis of ischemic stroke in a small subset of patients.

Predictors of Restenosis Following Carotid Angioplasty and Stenting
Restenosis after carotid angioplasty is associated with ipsilateral stroke occurrence. Hypertension, angioplasty without stent, and impaired vasoreactivity identify patients at high risk of restenosis and potentially could help select patients for follow-up ultrasound imaging.

Maternal cardiac function at 35 –37 weeks' gestation: prediction of pre‐eclampsia and gestational hypertension
ConclusionsIn women developing term PE total peripheral resistance and MAP are increased and maternal cardiac output is reduced. However, assessment of maternal cardiac function at 35–37 weeks' gestation is unlikely to improve the performance of screening for PE provided by maternal factors and MAP alone. Prehospital Ultrasound Proves its Worth in the War Against Stroke
Discussion Stroke is a devastating neurologic condition with an alarming prevalence. Each year, an estimated 795,000 people in the United States alone will suffer a stroke. Stroke accounts for one in every 20 deaths in the U.S., and someone dies of stroke in the U.S. every four minutes.1 One third of people who have had a stroke will be left with some degree of long-term disability.2 Eighty-seven percent of all strokes are ischemic, meaning that a clot or other occlusion to blood flow forms within an intracranial vessel, depriving the brain tissue of blood flow.1 If this obstruction isn't rapidly relieved, damage to the brain will occur.

Longitudinal hemodynamics in acute phase of treatment with labetalol in hypertensive pregnant women to predict need for vasodilatory therapy
ConclusionMaternal demographics and hemodynamic changes in the acute phase of labetalol monotherapy provide a powerful tool to identify hypertensive pregnant patients who are unlikely to have their BP controlled by this therapy and will consequently need additional vasodilatory therapy. Association of Subjective and Objective Sleep Duration as well as Sleep Quality with Non-Invasive Markers of Sub-Clinical Cardiovascular Disease (CVD): A Systematic Review.
CONCLUSIONS: Overall, our review provided mixed results, which is generally in line with published literature, with most of the studies showing a significant relationship with subclinical CVD, but only some studies failed to demonstrate such an association. Although such mechanistic relationship needs further evaluation in order to determine appropriate screening strategies in vulnerable populations, this review strongly suggested the existence of a relationship between abnormal sleep duration and quality with increased subclinical CVD burden. Risk factors between intracranial-extracranial atherosclerosis and anterior-posterior circulation stroke in ischaemic stroke.
CONCLUSION: Risk factors are different between ICAS and ECAS, ACS and PCS, and ICAS/ECAS with ACS/PCS. Thus, targeted strategies are needed to consider these differences to prevent, treat and manage these diseases. PMID: 27796172 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
