Early Spontaneous Recanalization of Symptomatic Carotid Occlusion: When Should We Be Looking? (P01.238)
CONCLUSIONS: Spontaneous recanalization of an occluded carotid artery may occur in a subacute fashion. Clinical deterioration, even minor, should prompt an investigation into possible recanalization.Disclosure: Dr. Cutting has received personal compensation for activities with F1000. Relation of Intracranial Stenosis and Elevated Carotid Intimal Medial Thickness in Black Caribbean Ischemic Stroke Patients (P03.187)
CONCLUSIONS: Our preliminary results suggest that increased MCA velocity is independent elevated CIMT, a biomarker for atherosclerosis, in anterior circulation ischemic stroke in CBs. History of hypercholesterolemia appears to be an important risk factor in atherosclerosis in CBs. This data suggests further prospective studies of MCA stenosis mechanisms in CBs are warranted.Disclosure: Dr. Law has nothing to disclose. Dr. Hao has nothing to disclose. Mediators of the Age Effect among Patients Treated with Carotid Artery Stenting: The Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy Versus Stenting Trial (CREST) (P02.017)
CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that a longer carotid artery lesion length is a significant contributor to the increased risk of CAS in the elderly. However, attenuation of the age effect was modest, less than a 10% change in the hazard ratios. Other potential mediators such as tortuosity and atherosclerosis of the aortic arch and great vessels were not assessed. Non-anatomic factors that are more common with advancing age such as cerebral white matter disease and subclinical dementia were also not assessed and may play a role in how elderly patients respond to ischemic insults.Disclosure: Dr. Voeks has nothing to disclose...

Prevalence and Clinical Correlation of Left Ventricular Systolic Dysfunction in African American Population with Ischemic Stroke (P02.044)
CONCLUSIONS: In this study the prevalence of LVSD in AA population with ischemic stroke was 22.45%. Among these, there was correlation between location of stroke and severity of LVSD. However prospective randomized studies are needed to validate our results. Disclosure: Dr. Devulapalli has nothing to disclose. Dr. Dunlap has nothing to disclose. Dr. Wilson has nothing to disclose. A Woman With a History of Stroke and a Mass in the Aorta
A 65-YEAR-OLD WOMAN presented with an acute onset of slurred speech and left facial droop. She had a past medical history of Raynaud's disease, well-controlled hypertension, and moderate tricuspid regurgitation, which was being followed by serial transthoracic echocardiographic examinations. A duplex ultrasound of the carotid and vertebral arteries was negative, whereas a magnetic resonance imaging scan of her brain revealed a subacute embolic cerebral infarction. A transesophageal echocardiographic (TEE) examination also was performed during the workup, revealing the presence of moderate-to-severe tricuspid regurgitation ...

Acute absolute vasodilatation is associated with a lower vascular wall stiffness in pulmonary arterial hypertension
Abstract: Background: Acute vasoreactivity testing (VT) is considered mandatory in the diagnostic work-up of patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). We studied the relation between the acute absolute arterial vasodilatation and the severity of vascular remodeling estimated by intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) in patients with idiopathic PAH.Methods: Simultaneous right heart catheterization and IVUS of the pulmonary artery (PA) were performed both in basal conditions and during short-term intravenous epoprostenol infusion in nineteen idiopathic PAH patients. Pulmonary vascular resistance (PVRi) and capacitance in...
