1990-2010 Global Cardiovascular Disease Atlas
Worldwide, the cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) contributing most to the total global burden of disease in 2010 were ischemic heart disease (5.2% of all disability-adjusted life years [DALYs] lost) and stroke (4.1% of all DALYs). The other major CVDs were hypertensive heart disease, cardiomyopathies, rheumatic heart disease, atrial fibrillation, aortic aneurysm, peripheral vascular disease, and endocarditis. The highest per capita CVD burden fell upon the Eastern Europe and Central Asia regions (). In the large populations of the South Asia and North Africa and Middle East regions, the absolute burden of CVDs is high and mor...

Abstract 312: Anatomic Runoff Score Predicts Cardiovascular Outcomes in Patients with Lower Extremity Peripheral Artery Disease Session Title: Poster Session III
Conclusions: After adjustment for clinical factors, the LE-PAD anatomic runoff score, age and indication for procedure were the most significant predictors of future cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in a broadly-representative patient population undergoing revascularization for symptomatic PAD. The use of a clinically useful anatomic scoring system, if validated, may assist clinicians in risk-stratifying patients during the course of clinical decision-making.

Efficacy and Safety of Vorapaxar as Approved for Clinical Use in the United States Coronary Heart Disease
Conclusions In patients with prior MI or PAD who have not had a previous stroke or TIA, vorapaxar added to standard therapy is effective for long-term secondary prevention of thrombotic CV events, while increasing moderate or severe bleeding. Clinical Trial Registration URL: clinicaltrials.gov Unique Identifier: NCT00526474.

Management and 1-Year Outcomes of Patients With Atrial Fibrillation in the Middle East: Gulf Survey of Atrial Fibrillation Events
We describe management and outcomes of patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (AF) in the Middle East. Consecutive patients with AF presenting to emergency departments (EDs) were prospectively enrolled. Among 1721 patients with nonvalvular AF, mean age was 59 ± 16 years and 44% were women. Comorbidities were common such as hypertension (59%), diabetes (33%), and coronary artery disease (33%). Warfarin was not prescribed to 40% of patients with Congestive heart failure, Hypertension, Age, Diabetes mellitus, Stroke/TIA2 score of ≥2. One-year rates of stroke/transient ischemic attack (TIA) and all-cause morta...

Cardiovascular events in acute coronary syndrome patients with peripheral arterial disease treated with ticagrelor compared with clopidogrel: Data from the PLATO Trial
Conclusion PAD patients have a high rate of ischaemic and bleeding events post ACS. The reduction of CV death, MI or stroke with ticagrelor compared with clopidogrel in PAD patients was consistent with the overall trial result although it did not reach statistical significance. Overall major bleeding was similar between the therapies.

Costs of treating cardiovascular events in Germany: a systematic literature review
Conclusion MI, unstable angina, HF, stroke and PAD have a high financial impact on the German health care system. Treatment costs of these diseases are mostly incurred during the acute phase of events and tend to decrease over time. Hospitalization and rehabilitation costs were two major cost drivers. Medication costs was one of the smallest cost component reported.

'Fat but fit' still at higher risk of heart disease
Conclusion The question of whether someone can be "fat but fit" has been much debated. If you're obese but exercise, eat well and don't have metabolic risk factors, the theory goes, you could be just as healthy as someone of recommended weight. This study suggests that may not be true. It is definitely worth adopting a healthy lifestyle, whatever your weight. The study found that, the more metabolic risk factors people had, the more likely they were to develop heart disease, cardiovascular disease and so on. Metabolic risk factors do make a difference. But in this large study, on average, people who were obese ...

Abstract 204: Cardiovascular Mortality and Non-fatal Cardiovascular Events After Diagnosis of Acute Aortic Syndrome Session Title: Poster Session PM
Conclusions: AAS is associated with a higher overall mortality and an increased risk of any first time CV event, first time MI and HF that persists beyond the acute phase. These data highlight the risk of CV events among those with AAS and implicate the need for long-term cardiovascular management in these patients.

Prognostic and therapeutic implications of vascular disease in patients with atrial fibrillation
Publication date: Available online 23 April 2018 Source:Pharmacological Research Author(s): Farhan Shahid, Daniele Pastori, Francesco Violi, Gregory YH Lip Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with a 5-fold increase in the risk of ischemic stroke, and AF-related stroke patients have a higher mortality and greater morbidity than patients with non-AF related stroke. AF and vascular disease share a close relationship, with the concomitant presence of both disease states leading to a dramatic rise in future cardiovascular events. Indeed, the presence of peripheral artery disease independently predicts stroke in patients wit...

Long ‐term results of carotid stenting and risk factors in patients with severe carotid artery stenosis undergoing subsequent cardiac surgery
ConclusionsIn this study with staged CAS followed by cardiac surgery, we confirm previously reported event ‐free survival rates and identify several risk factors for the composite outcome. Future studies are needed to confirm the importance of the identified risk factors and to assess their predictive ability.
