Unlucky numbers: Fighting murder convictions that rest on shoddy stats
LEIDEN, THE NETHERLANDS— When a Dutch nurse named Lucia de Berk stood trial for serial murder in 2003, statistician Richard Gill was aware of the case. But he saw no reason to stick his nose into it. De Berk was a pediatric nurse at Juliana Children’s Hospital in The Hague. In 2001, after a baby died while she was on duty, a colleague told superiors that De Berk had been present at a suspiciously high number of deaths and resuscitations. Hospital staff immediately informed the police. When investigators reexamined records from De Berk’s shifts, they found 10 suspicious incidents. Three other hospitals where D...

Diverse cardiovascular risk of recurrent spontaneous abortion: A prospective cohort study using UK Biobank
Previous studies have reported that history of recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) can increase the risk for cardiovascular disease. However, previous studies mainly focused on atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), such as coronary artery disease or stroke, hence the effect of RSA on non-atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (non-ASCVD) remains unknown. In the current study, we examined if women with a history of RSA have an increased risk for long-term cardiovascular outcomes including both ASCVD and non-ASCVD.

Cerebrovascular disease in pregnancy and postpartum
Purpose of review Cerebrovascular disorders during pregnancy and puerperium are uncommon but potentially serious entities. This review aims to provide guidance on the diagnosis and management of these diseases, according to the most recent findings. Recent findings Proteinuria is no longer a mandatory criterion for the diagnosis of preeclampsia. Favourable long-term foetal and maternal outcomes are achieved in most patients with ruptured cerebral arterial malformations during pregnancy receiving interventional treatment prior to delivery. Despite the recent recommendations, physicians still hesitate to administe...

Autoantibodies to Annexin A2 and cerebral thrombosis: Insights from a mouse model.
CONCLUSIONS: This study supports the hypothesis that auto-antibodies to ANXA2 are an independent risk factor for cerebral thrombosis. Consequently, we propose screening for anti-ANXA2 antibodies should be more widely used and patients that exhibit the manifestations of APS should be closely monitored by physicians. Applying Ethical Principles When Discussing Alcohol Use During Pregnancy
AbstractOver the past 2 decades, more women in the United States are engaging in excessive alcohol use, including women of reproductive age. Consuming alcohol in amounts greater than recommended limits is associated with an increased risk for adverse health effects, such as breast cancer, hypertension stroke, spontaneous abortion, and infertility. Any amount of alcohol use during pregnancy can result in a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. No safe time, safe amount, or safe type of alcohol to consume during pregnancy has been identified. Contradictory beliefs about alcohol use, fear of stigmatization, and potential legal con...

Rituximab, MS, and pregnancy
Conclusion We observed no increase in adverse pregnancy outcomes compared with expected national incidence rates and remarkably little disease activity in RTX-treated women with MS, particularly when compared with periconceptional natalizumab-treated cohorts. However, larger studies are needed to fully assess the safety of RTX use before pregnancy, especially risks associated with prolonged B-cell depletion and hypogammaglobulinemia. Until these data are available, we recommend restricting RTX use before pregnancy to women who require highly effective MS treatments. Classification of evidence This study provides Class IV ...

A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of the Adverse Effects of Levonorgestrel Emergency Oral Contraceptive
ConclusionsThe most common adverse effects of levonorgestrel were not serious. This systematic review shows that data regarding the adverse reactions of repeated use of levonorgestrel are scarce. Studies on the multiple uses of levonorgestrel emergency contraception are still required to ensure its safety.

Pregnancy after direct cerebral bypass for moyamoya disease.
CONCLUSIONS: The authors present neurological and obstetric outcomes data in a large cohort of MMD patients. These data indicate that post-bypass pregnancy is accompanied by low complication rates. There were no ischemic or hemorrhagic strokes among post-bypass pregnant MMD patients. The rate of obstetric complications was low overall. The authors recommend close collaboration between the vascular neurosurgeon and the obstetrician regarding medical management, including blood pressure goals and continuation of low-dose aspirin.
