Distribution of risk factors differs from coronary heart disease and stroke in China: a national population survey
Conclusions The distribution of risk factors for CHD and stroke were substantial differences. More specific prevention and control measures should be formulated according to the distribution differences of risk factors related to CVD.

Use of antiplatelet drugs in stroke prevention: time for a rethink?
Worldwide, 15 million people suffer stroke each year from which a third die and a further third sustain severe disability, with ischaemic events accounting for ~80% of all strokes.1 The annual estimated economic burden of stroke is 64.1 billion in Europe alone.2 While recent major investments in acute stroke services have focused on thrombolysis and hospitalisation in dedicated stroke wards, we believe that primary and secondary stroke prevention should remain of utmost importance in a disease that carries such serious permanent neurological sequelae. Antiplatelet agents such as aspirin, diypridamole or clodpidogrel are ph...

Association of Atrial Fibrillation and Stroke: Analysis of Maccabi Health Services Cardiovascular Database.
CONCLUSIONS: Analysis of the MHS vascular database yielded useful information on stroke prevalence and association of known risk factors with stroke, which is consistent with the epidemiological literature elsewhere. Further analysis of health fund data could potentially provide useful information in the future. PMID: 26394490 [PubMed - in process]

Cardiovascular diseases in patients 65 years and younger with non-cardiogenic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Aetiologically heterogeneous stroke and cardiogenic stroke are the most commonly observed among young stroke patients. Cardiomyopathy and atrial fibrillation are the most common sources of cerebral embolism in young patients with cardiogenic stroke. Nearly 1/5 of patients with a non-cardiogenic stroke have congenital or acquired structural changes in the heart. PMID: 27279848 [PubMed]

Clinical role of von Willebrand factor in acute ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSION: Among the patients with ischemic stroke, levels of VWF were not increased in those with CE stroke. High levels of VWF were associated with greater severity of stroke as well as with poor clinical outcome. PMID: 28409234 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Prevalence of stroke and metabolic disorders in the middle-aged and elderly Chinese with type 2 diabetes.
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of stroke was higher in middle-aged and elderly Chinese with type 2 diabetes than that in the general population. With the aggregation of risk factors, the prevalence of stroke increased. PMID: 25316225 [PubMed - in process]

Clinical characteristics, precipitating factors, management and outcome of patients with prior stroke hospitalised with heart failure: an observational report from the Middle East
Conclusions This observational study reports high prevalence of prior stroke in patients hospitalised with HF. Internists rather than cardiologists were the predominant caregivers in this high-risk group. Patients with stroke had higher risk of in-hospital recurrent strokes and long-term mortality rates. Trial registration number NCT01467973.

Stroke in young adults and incidence rate in 280 patients according to their aetiological subtype.
CONCLUSIONS: Stroke in young adults is infrequent (6.1% of the total), but represents the highest frequency of cerebral infarcts of unusual aetiology (36%). We conclude that stroke in younger patients presents its own and differentiated clinical profile. PMID: 26726109 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Hospital Discharge Disposition of Stroke Patients in Tennessee.
CONCLUSIONS: Our investigation revealed that the hospital discharge disposition pattern of patients with stroke in Tennessee was associated with the key patient characteristics of selected demographics, clinical indicators, and insurance status. These analyses resulted in the development of an easy-to-use predictive tool for early determination of hospital discharge disposition status. PMID: 28863224 [PubMed - in process]

Factors associated with the longer-term unmet supportive care needs of stroke survivors in Ethiopia: a multicentre cross-sectional study
Conclusions There are significant longer-term unmet supportive care needs among adult stroke survivors. The factors associated with longer-term unmet supportive care needs were; having comorbidities, moderate and above level of disability according to the modified Rankin Scale score and unable to use the physiotherapy service. The development of appropriate services to address the longer-term unmet supportive care needs of stroke survivors is warranted.
