Intermediate-Term Outcomes Following Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation in Patients with a History of Chest Radiation Therapy: A Propensity Score Matched Analysis
J Invasive Cardiol. 2023 Jun;35(6):E291-E293.ABSTRACTChest radiation therapy (XRT) has been associated with a higher rate of mortality following surgical aortic valve replacement. We performed a single-center retrospective analysis of patients with severe AS who underwent TAVI from January 1 2012 to July 31 2020 comparing patients with and without XRT. A total of 915 patients met inclusion criteria, with a total of 50 patients found to have a history of XRT. At a mean follow-up of 2.4 years, unadjusted and propensity score matching analysis demonstrated no differences in mortality, heart failure or bleeding-related hospita...

The Effect of Frailty on the Efficacy and Safety of Intensive Blood Pressure Control: A Post Hoc Analysis of the SPRINT Trial
CONCLUSIONS: Frailty status was a marker of high cardiovascular risk. Patients with frailty benefit similarly to other patients from intensive blood pressure control without an increased risk of serious adverse events.PMID:37401465 | DOI:10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.123.064003

Impact of comorbidities on health status measured using the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire in patients with HFrEF and HFpEF
ConclusionsCardiac and non-cardiac comorbidities are common in both HFrEF and HFpEF patients and most are associated with reductions in health status although the impact varied among comorbidities, by the number of comorbidities, and by HF phenotype. Treating/correcting comorbidity is a therapeutic approach that may improve the health status of patients with HF.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Allostatic load and incident heart failure in the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study
Allostatic load (AL) is the physiologic “wear and tear” on the body from stress. Yet, despite stress being implicated in the development heart failure (HF), it is unknown whether AL is associated with incident...

Association Between Physical Activity and Risk of Incident Cardiovascular Disease in Women With Early Menopause: Evidence From the UK Biobank Cohort
This study sought to determine the association of early menopause with incident coronary heart disease (CHD), heart failure (HF), arrhythmia and stroke, and evaluate if higher physical activity (PA) is protective in this setting.

Rheumatic Heart Disease Echocardiogram Screening by Nonexperts: A Review
Rheumatic Heart Disease occurs when heart valves are damaged by Rheumatic Fever. Young First Nations Australians aged between 5 –14 years are at high risk of developing Rheumatic Fever. Complications of Rheumatic Heart Disease include atrial fibrillation, endocarditis, heart failure, and stroke. Early disease detection is essential as Acute Rheumatic Fever is easily treatable if detected early.

A Statewide Population-Linkage Study on the Impact of Atrial Fibrillation on Outcomes in 145,293 Patients Admitted With COVID-19
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is common in COVID-19 patients. The impact of AF on major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE defined as all-cause mortality, myocardial infarction, ischaemic stroke, heart failure or revascularisation), recurrent admissions with AF, and venous thromboembolism in patients hospitalised with COVID-19 is not well-defined.

Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme and Hypertension: A Systemic Analysis of Various ACE Inhibitors, Their Side Effects, and Bioactive Peptides as a Putative Therapy for Hypertension
J Renin Angiotensin Aldosterone Syst. 2023 Jun 21;2023:7890188. doi: 10.1155/2023/7890188. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTHypertension is a major risk factor for heart attack, produce atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), congestive heart failure, stroke, kidney infection, blindness, end-stage renal infection, and cardiovascular diseases. Many mechanisms are involved in causing hypertension, i.e., via calcium channels, alpha and beta receptors, and the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). RAS has an important role in blood pressure control and is also involved in the metabolism of glucose, homeostasis, and balance of electroly...

Influenza vaccination and cardiovascular events in patients with ischaemic heart disease and heart failure: A meta ‐analysis
ConclusionIn this meta-analysis of available RCTs in patients at high cardiovascular risk, influenza vaccination was associated with a reduced incidence of cardiovascular events, cardiovascular death and all-cause death as compared to placebo or no treatment.

Sex ‐based differences in safety and efficacy of catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation
ConclusionFemale patients were older and had higher CHA2DS2-VASc scores compared to males at the time of AF ablation. Women tried more AADs than men before ablation. One-year arrhythmia recurrence rates and procedural complications were similar in both sexes. No sex-based differences were observed in safety and efficacy of ablation.
