Heartbeat: prediction of atrial fibrillation risk
One of the challenges in prevention of stroke is identification of patients at risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) shortly before the onset of the arrhythmia so that prevention therapies can be promptly instituted. In this issue of Heart, Nadarajah and colleagues1 report the development and validation of an algorithm based on data from the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink GOLD dataset that included 2 081 139 individuals of whom 7386 developed AF within 6 months. This new algorithm-- Future Innovations in Novel Detection of Atrial Fibrillation (FIND-AF) – identified a high-risk cohort with a 20-fold higher 6 month ...

Baseline natriuretic peptides as a predictor of atrial fibrillation recurrence after radiofrequency ‐based pulmonary vein isolation in a non‐heart failure population: A subanalysis from DECAAF II
ConclusionIn the non-heart failure population, BNP levels predict AF recurrence following PVI in persistent AF patients.

The Relation Between Viscous Energy Dissipation and Pulsation for Aortic Hemodynamics Driven by a Left Ventricular Assist Device
AbstractLeft ventricular assist device (LVAD) provides mechanical circulatory support for patients with advanced heart failure. Treatment using LVAD is commonly associated with complications such as stroke and gastro-intestinal bleeding. These complications are intimately related to the state of hemodynamics in the aorta, driven by a jet flow from the LVAD outflow graft that impinges into the aorta wall. Here we conduct a systematic analyses of hemodynamics driven by an LVAD with a specific focus on viscous energy transport and dissipation. We conduct a complementary set of analysis using idealized cylindrical tubes with d...

Conditional Survival after HeartMate 3 Implantation: An Analysis of the MOMENTUM 3 Trial
MOMENTUM 3 was a landmark randomized controlled trial of 1028 advanced heart failure patients investigating the outcomes associated with the HeartMate 3 (HM3), a magnetically-levitated centrifugal continuous-flow left ventricular assist device (LVAD) compared to HeartMate II (HMII), an axial continuous-flow LVAD.(1) The primary endpoint was survival-free of disabling stroke and reoperation to replace or remove a malfunctioning device at 6- and 24- months.(1) At both time points, HM3 patients were more likely to successfully achieve the primary endpoint than patients randomized to HMII (6 months: 86.2% vs.

Antithrombotiques oraux et pronostic apr ès un an des patients atteints de fibrillation auriculaire dans un milieu à ressources limitées
CONCLUSION: Half of patients with atrial fibrillation in this registry developed an outcome after one year of follow-up, with heart failure, new onset and paroxystic atrial fibrillation being the main predicting factors. Diagnosing and managing atrial fibrillation in patients with heart disease should therefore be considered as a key priority.PMID:37331159 | DOI:10.1016/j.ancard.2023.101616

A causal relationship between irritability and cardiovascular diseases: a Mendelian randomization study
CONCLUSION: Our findings support the first genetic evidence of the causality of genetically predicted irritability with the risk of developing into CVDs. Our results deliver a viewpoint that more early active interventions to manage an individual's anger and related unhealthy lifestyle habits are needed to prevent the occurrence of adverse cardiovascular events.PMID:37324625 | PMC:PMC10267866 | DOI:10.3389/fcvm.2023.1174329
