Effectiveness of Constraint-Induced Language Therapy for Aphasia: Evidence From Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses
CONCLUSIONS: CILT led to improvements in a variety of language and communication measures. When compared with intensive multimodality treatments, CILT effects were similar, suggesting that training intensity may be the potent factor in CILT outcomes. Future SRs should be implemented with increased rigor across quality rating scale domains to increase confidence in conclusions.PMID:36668725 | DOI:10.1044/2022_AJSLP-22-00248

Access, referral, service provision and management of individuals with primary progressive aphasia: A survey of speech-language therapists in Italy
CONCLUSION: Findings may serve to inform health policy organisations regarding the current shortcomings and needed recommendations for improving the care of individuals with PPA in Italy. Improving awareness of the utility of rehabilitation among SLTs and other clinical service providers may serve to facilitate access to intervention, which in turn will serve to better support individuals living with PPA.WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on the subject Speech and language therapists (SLTs) play a crucial role in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of people with primary progressive aphasia (PPA). However, the...

Sensors, Vol. 23, Pages 857: A Comparative Investigation of Automatic Speech Recognition Platforms for Aphasia Assessment Batteries
Qiang Fang The rehabilitation of aphasics is fundamentally based on the assessment of speech impairment. Developing methods for assessing speech impairment automatically is important due to the growing number of stroke cases each year. Traditionally, aphasia is assessed manually using one of the well-known assessment batteries, such as the Western Aphasia Battery (WAB), the Chinese Rehabilitation Research Center Aphasia Examination (CRRCAE), and the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination (BDAE). In aphasia testing, a speech-language pathologist (SLP) administers multiple subtests to assess people with aphasia (PWA). Th...

Language reorganization patterns in global aphasia –evidence from fNIRS
ConclusionThe left SMG plays a critical role in the language function of patients with global aphasia, especially in their abilities to name and repeat. fNIRS is a promising approach to revealing the changes in brain activities in patients with aphasia, and we believe it will contribute to a deeper understanding of the neurological mechanisms and the establishment of a novel treatment approach for global aphasia.

Three-Dimensional Speech Profiles in Stroke Aphasia and Apraxia of Speech
CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that the current AOS-APP dichotomy has limited validity. We conclude that a continuous multidimensional view of speech variation would be a constructive perspective from which to understand how the left cerebral hemisphere produces speech and that quantitative and normed speech measures should be used to inform differential diagnosis in clinical settings.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.21807609.PMID:36603554 | DOI:10.1044/2022_AJSLP-22-00170

Establishing severity levels for patient-reported measures of functional communication, participation, and perceived cognitive function for adults with acquired cognitive and language disorders
ConclusionStandardized, stakeholder-informed severity levels that aid interpretation of PROM scores can help clinicians and researchers derive better clinical meaning from those scores, for example, by identifying important clinical windows of opportunity and assessing when symptoms have returned to a “normal” range.

Longitudinal changes in functional connectivity in speech motor networks in apraxia of speech after stroke
ConclusionEarly interhemispheric IFG connectivity may be a strong predictor of AOS recovery. The results support the importance of interhemispheric vPMC connection in speech motor planning and severity of AOS and suggest that also bilateral aINS connectivity may have an impact on AOS severity. These findings need to be validated in larger cohorts.

A phase II randomised controlled trial evaluating the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of an education program on speech-language pathologist' self-efficacy, and self-rated competency for counselling to support psychological wellbeing in people with post-stroke aphasia
CONCLUSIONS: The demonstrated feasibility and preliminary efficacy of this online counseling program warrant a future definitive trial.PMID:36440678 | DOI:10.1080/10749357.2022.2145736
