Prevalence of comorbidities in rheumatoid arthritis and evaluation of their monitoring: results of an international, cross-sectional study (COMORA)
Conclusions Among RA patients, there is a high prevalence of comorbidities and their risk factors. In this multinational sample, variability among countries was wide, not only in prevalence but also in compliance with recommendations for preventing and managing these comorbidities. Systematic measurement of vital signs and laboratory testing detects otherwise unrecognised comorbid conditions.

Platelet-Secreted MicroRNA-223 Promotes Endothelial Cell Apoptosis Induced by Advanced Glycation End Products via Targeting the Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 Receptor.
In conclusion, our study presents the first evidence, to our knowledge, that platelet-released miR-223 promotes advanced glycation end product-induced vascular endothelial cell apoptosis via targeting insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor. PMID: 24307738 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Asthma Management in Sickle Cell Disease.
Abstract Asthma is a common comorbid factor in sickle cell disease (SCD). However, the incidence of asthma in SCD is much higher than expected compared to rates in the general population. Whether "asthma" in SCD is purely related to genetic and environmental factors or rather is the consequence of the underlying hemolytic and inflammatory state is a topic of recent debate. Regardless of the etiology, hypoxemia induced by bronchoconstriction and inflammation associated with asthma exacerbations will contribute to a cycle of sickling and subsequent complications of SCD. Recent studies confirm that asthma predisposes...

Chronic disease co-morbidity of asthma and unscheduled asthma care among adults: results of the national telephone health interview survey German Health Update (GEDA) 2009 and 2010.
CONCLUSIONS: The magnitude of chronic disease co-morbidity is substantial in asthma, is related to unscheduled asthma care, and implies a significant number of adults with asthma facing complex healthcare needs. PMID: 24346826 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

CD147: a Novel Modulator of Inflammatory and Immune Disorders.
Abstract CD147, a transmembrane glycoprotein, is expressed on all leukocytes, platelets, and endothelial cells. It has been implicated in a variety of physiological and pathological activities through interacting with multiple partners, including cyclophilins, monocarboxylate transporters, Caveolin-1, and integrins. While CD147 is best known as a potent inducer of extracellular matrix metalloproteinases (hence also called EMMPRIN), it can also function as a key mediator of inflammatory and immune responses. Increased expression of CD147 has been implicated in the pathogenesis of a number of diseases, such as asthm...

Comparison of Systemic Health Conditions between African American and Caucasian Complete Denture Patients
ConclusionsAmong selected completely edentulous denture patients at an urban dental school, two out of three patients had at least one SHC. This exploratory study suggests there may be health status differences between African American and Caucasian patients in this setting, calling for further study.

Chronic diseases and individual risk for workplace injury
Among adults in the USA, the prevalence of obesity is approximately 36%, diabetes or prediabetes 11% and asthma 8%.1–3 Globally, deaths from non-communicable diseases, including cancer, ischaemic heart disease and stroke, accounted for two of every three deaths in 2010.4 Based on the prevalence of these illnesses, along with the estimated high medical costs to treat them, chronic diseases are considered the major public health challenge of the 21st century.5 At the same time, fatal and non-fatal occupational injuries also exact a significant toll on society. In 2011, nearly 4700 workers were killed on the job and ano...

Systemic Corticosteroids in Acute Chest Syndrome: Friend or Foe?
Summary: Acute chest syndrome(ACS) is the most common pulmonary complication of sickle cell disease (SCD), the second most common cause of hospitalization and the primary cause of death in patients with sickle cell disease. Its highest prevalence is in early childhood. The pathogenesis of ACS is unknown but many predisposing conditions and mechanisms have been implicated including infections, pulmonary fat embolism, asthma and ischemic reperfusion injury. These conditions are associated with inflammation and therefore, the use of corticosteroids has been advocated because of their anti-inflammatory properties. Although, si...

Treat or Eat: Food Insecurity, Cost-related Medication Underuse, and Unmet Needs
Conclusions: Approximately 1 in 3 chronically ill NHIS participants are unable to afford food, medications, or both. WIC and public health insurance participation are associated with less food insecurity and cost-related medication underuse.

Pheochromocytoma crisis resulting in acute heart failure and cardioembolic stroke in a 37-year-old man
A previously healthy, 37-year-old man presented to his primary care physician with new-onset hypertension, cough, and dyspnea. He was initially diagnosed with asthma and was treated with inhalation corticosteroids. Despite treatment, his symptoms worsened over a 3-month period. Although previously athletic, he developed exercise intolerance, orthopnea, and paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea. His symptoms prompted admission to a community hospital to rule out pulmonary embolism. Contrast computed tomography of the chest instead demonstrated a 5.3 × 4.8-cm left adrenal tumor ().

Rare Presentation of Churg-Strauss Syndrome: Intracerebral Hemorrhage, Subdural Hemorrhage and an Intracranial Aneurysm (P2.103)
DISCUSSION:CSS can present with rare neurologic complications namely peripheral neuropathy, ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke and much less commonly - intracranial aneurysms. Our patient also had cardiac masses that resolved after treatment with high dose steroids. Subdural hemorrhage along with a left MCA aneurysm related to CSS has not been previously reported in literature.Disclosure: Dr. Chahil has nothing to disclose. Dr. Morgan has nothing to disclose.
