Transcatheter valve-in-valve implantation versus redo surgical aortic valve replacement in patients with failed aortic bioprostheses
CONCLUSIONS Despite a higher risk profile in the ViV group, early mortality rates were not different compared with those of surgery. Although ViV resulted in elevated transvalvular gradients and therefore a lower rate of device success, mortality rates were similar to those with redo-SAVR. At present, both techniques serve as complementary approaches, and allow individualized patient care with excellent outcomes.

Fatal Neisseria macacae infective endocarditis: first report
We present here the first case ofN. macacae infective endocarditis in a 65-year-old man with a native aortic valve infection complicated by a peri-aortic abscess. N. macacae was isolated from blood culture and was found on the cardiac valve using 16S rDNA detection. Despite an appropriate antibiotic therapy, and aortic homograft replacement, and mitral repair, the patient died 4  days after surgery from a massive hemorrhagic stroke.

Trends and outcomes of infective endocarditis in patients on dialysis
We examined outcomes of 44 816 patients with IE on dialysis and 202 547 patients with IE not on dialysis from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample database from 2006 thorough 2011. Dialysis patients were younger (59 ± 15 years vs 62 ± 18 years) and more likely to be female (47% vs 40%) and African‐American (47% vs 40%; all P < 0.001). Hospitalizations for IE in the dialysis group increased from 175 to 222 per 10 000 patients (P trend = 0.04). Staphylococcus aureus was the most common microorganism isolated in both dialysis (61%) and nondialysis (45%) groups. IE due to S aureus (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]...

Severe Vasospasm of the Middle Cerebral Artery after Mechanical Thrombectomy Due to Infective Endocarditis: An Autopsy Case
We describe a case of middle cerebral artery occlusion due to IE, which caused severe vasospasm and reocclusion after mechanical thrombectomy (MT). We present the pathologic findings of the occluded middle cerebral artery and investigate the precautions to be taken while performing MT due to IE. A 72-year-old man with atrial fibrillation treated with dabigatran presented with right hemiparesis and aphasia.

Return to the Workforce Following Infective Endocarditis – a Nationwide Cohort Study
Conclusions Seven out of ten patients who were part of the workforce prior to IE and alive at discharge were part of the workforce one year later. Younger age, higher socioeconomic status, and absence of major comorbidities were associated with return to the workforce.

Infective Endocarditis at a Hospital in Saudi Arabia: Epidemiology, Bacterial Pathogens and Outcome
CONCLUSION: Native valve endocarditis is the predominant type of endocarditis. The patients were older adults and the most common organisms wereSaureus, E faecalis and viridans streptococci. Ann Saudi Med 2009; 29(6): 433-436

Prosthetic valve endocarditis in patients on hemodialysis
We read with great interest the manuscript entitled “Prognostic factors of infective endocarditis in patients on hemodialysis: A case series from a National Multicenter Registry” by Dr. A. Ramos-Martínez and colleagues showing that hemodialysis patients with IE present a high mortality and that advanced age and complications, such as heart failu re, CNS stroke or septic shock, are associated with mortality [1].

Marseille scoring system for empiric treatment of infective endocarditis
AbstractDespite advances in medical, surgical, and critical care, infective endocarditis (IE) remains associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. We evaluated the performance of the Marseille score, including clinical data and biological tests obtained within 2  h, to identify patients at high risk of IE in order to initiate early antimicrobial treatment. This was secondarily confirmed using modified ESC criteria combined with molecular testing and(18)fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography as diagnostic tools. In a prospective cohort study, we enrolled 484 patients with cardiovascula...

Valvectomy versus Replacement for the Surgical Treatment of Tricuspid Endocarditis
Conclusions Tricuspid valve excision, repair, and replacement have similar 30-day operative mortality, as defined by the STS, in TV endocarditis patients and significantly lower unplanned readmission rates at one year in the excision patients. Tricuspid valvectomy is an acceptable initial treatment in this high-risk group as part of a surgical strategy to identify patients who are candidates for eventual valve replacement. Further study of long term outcomes and survival is warranted.

Homograft Versus Conventional Prosthesis for Surgical Management of Aortic Valve Infective Endocarditis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Conclusions Homografts and conventional prostheses offer similar survival and freedom from recurrent endocarditis and reoperation for aortic valve IE. Homografts may be associated with greater risk of reoperation compared with mechanical valves.
