Subsequent mortality after hyperglycemic crisis episode in the non-elderly: a national population-based cohort study
Abstract Hyperglycemic crisis episodes (HCEs)—diabetic ketoacidosis and the hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state—are the most serious acute metabolic complications of diabetes. We aimed to investigate the subsequent mortality after HCE in the non-elderly diabetic which is still unclear. This retrospective national population-based cohort study reviewed, in Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database, data from 23,079 non-elder patients (≤65 years) with new-onset diabetes between 2000 and 2002: 7693 patients with HCE and 15,386 patients without HCE (1:2). Both groups were compared, and follow-up p...

Obesity: single house for many evils.
Authors: Kumar A, Nayak BP, Kumar A Abstract World Health Organization (WHO) considers obesity as one of the fastest growing metabolic disorders other than diabetes. It is a complex interplay of lifestyle and associated genes. Obesity has been considered as a disease with multiple targets and very often compared in this sense with its sibling disease type 2 diabetes. The disease is pathology of the adipocytes and develops as a result of hypertrophy and hyperplasia of these cells, former being the major concern but its effects could be seen on various organs in the form of cardio-vascular disease, stroke, cancer, di...

Socio‐Economic Factors Relating to Diabetes and its Management in India
Abstract Diabetes is an escalating problem in India and has major socio‐economic dimensions. Rapid dietary changes coupled with decreased level of physical activity have resulted in increasing obesity and diabetes in rural and semi‐urban areas and in urban based people living in resettlement colonies. Increasing risk has also been recorded in those who suffered from poor childhood nutrition, and in rural‐to‐urban migrants. Social inequity manifests in disparities in socio‐economic strata (SES), place of residence, education, gender, level of awareness and affect prevention, care and management. All these populati...

Long-term Mortality Risk After Hyperglycemic Crisis Episodes in Geriatric Patients With Diabetes: A National Population-Based Cohort Study
CONCLUSIONS Patients with diabetes had a higher mortality risk after HCE during the first 6 years of follow-up. Referral for proper education, better access to medical care, effective communication with a health care provider, and control of comorbidities should be done immediately after HCE.

Infertility etiologies are genetically and clinically linked with other diseases in single meta-diseases
The present review aims to ascertain whether different infertility etiologies share particular genes and/or molecular pathways with other pathologies and are associated with distinct and particular risks of later-life morbidity and mortality. In order to reach this aim, we use two different sources of information: (1) a public web server named DiseaseConnect (http://disease-connect.org) focused on the analysis of common genes and molecular mechanisms shared by diseases by integrating comprehensive omics and literature data; and (2) a literature search directed to find clinical comorbid relationships of infertility etiologi...

One special question to start with: Can HIF/NFkB be a target in inflammation?
Abstract Hypoxia and Inflammation are strictly interconnected with important consequences at clinical and therapeutic level. While cell and tissue damage due to acute hypoxia mostly leads to cell necrosis, in chronic hypoxia, cells that are located closer to vessels are able to survive adapting their phenotype through the expression of a number of genes, including proinflammatory receptors for alarmins. These receptors are activated by alarmins released by necrotic cells and generate signals for master transcription factors such as NFkB, AP1, etc. which control hundreds of genes for innate immunity and damage repa...

Impact of age-adjusted Insulin-like Growth Factor I on major cardiovascular events after acute myocardial infarction.
CONCLUSIONS: Low IGF-I score is associated with increased risk of all cause-death, recurrent MI and stroke in AMI patients. Whether patients treated by IGF-I axis inhibitors have a specific clinical course after AMI would be worth studying. PMID: 25699636 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Risk of all-cause mortality and vascular events in women versus men with type 1 diabetes: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Publication date: Available online 6 February 2015 Source:The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology Author(s): Rachel R Huxley , Sanne A E Peters , Gita D Mishra , Mark Woodward Background Studies have suggested sex differences in the mortality rate associated with type 1 diabetes. We did a meta-analysis to provide reliable estimates of any sex differences in the effect of type 1 diabetes on risk of all-cause mortality and cause-specific outcomes. Methods We systematically searched PubMed for studies published between Jan 1, 1966, and Nov 26, 2014. Selected studies reported sex-specific estimates of the standardised m...

Risk of New‐onset Diabetes after Androgen Deprivation Therapy for Prostate Cancer in the Asian Population
ConclusionsThere was increased risk of new‐onset DM after ADT for prostate cancer in the Asian population. Regular screening of DM can be considered after the initiation of ADT, especially in patients with known history of dyslipidemia and impaired fasting glucose.

Hormone replacement therapy in menopause
Outras p...

Top News in Endocrinology: Vitamin D Benefit Questioned
(MedPage Today) -- Topping endocrinology headlines this week, a futility analysis of randomized controlled trials found that vitamin D doesn't protect against fracture, heart attack, stroke, or cancer -- and future studies are unlikely to change that.
