From neurons to the neuro-glio-vascular unit: Seizures and brain homeostasis in networks
Rev Neurol (Paris). 2023 Feb 7:S0035-3787(23)00748-8. doi: 10.1016/j.neurol.2022.12.005. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWhile seizures are undoubtedly neuronal events, an ensemble of auxiliary brain cells profoundly shapes synaptic transmission in health and disease conditions. Endothelial-astrocyte-pericyte assemblies at the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and neuroglia within the neuro-glio-vascular unit (NGVU) finely tune brain parenchymal homeostasis, safeguarding the ionic and molecular compositions of the interstitial fluid. BBB permeability with neuroinflammation and the resulting loss of brain homeostatic control are unif...

Management dilemma in a rare case of pituitary apoplexy with akinetic mutism in the setting of ruptured junctional brain aneurysm: A case report and literature review
CONCLUSION: Pituitary apoplexy with ruptured A1-Acom junction aneurysm with nonfunctioning pituitary macroadenoma is rare, and its presentation with akinetic mutism has not been reported. As there is scarce literature suggesting an association between pituitary apoplexy and ruptured aneurysm, it is challenging to comment regarding its pathogenesis. Although akinetic mutism generally has a poor prognosis, it may respond to Levodopa with a better outcome.PMID:36751455 | PMC:PMC9899474 | DOI:10.25259/SNI_942_2022

Neuroprotective effects of betanin in mice with cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury
Exp Anim. 2023 Feb 8. doi: 10.1538/expanim.22-0176. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCerebral ischemia reperfusion (IR) injury as found in stroke is a complex and heterogeneous disorder and closely related to disability and death. Today, nutraceuticals and protective therapy to increase neuronal integrity and prevent pathological complication are common. We investigated the neuroprotective effect of betanin against cerebral IR injury in mice. Forty male institute of cancer research (ICR) mice were divided into Sham-veh, IR-veh, IR-Bet50 and IR-Bet100 groups. After 2 weeks of oral administration of normal saline (vehicle; veh)...
