Current status and future aspects in the Japan Stroke Data Bank
The Japanese National Plan for the Promotion of Measures Against Cerebrovascular and Cardiovascular Diseases was formulated on October 27, 2020. One purpose of this plan was to promote research on cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the actual status of stroke treatment in Japan and operate a national stroke database with high public interest completely and accurately. The Japan Stroke Data Bank (JSDB; https://strokedatabank.ncvc.go.jp/en/) was established by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare Scientific Research in Shimane University (Shimane, Japan) in 1999 and was tr...

Impact of Cardiovascular Disease on the Death Certificate Diagnosis of Heart Failure, Ischemic Heart Disease, and Cerebrovascular Disease - The Japan Public Health Center-Based Prospective Study
CONCLUSIONS: HF as the UCD was partly explained by CVD. The data imply that most HF deaths reported in vital statistics may be associated with underlying causes other than CVD.PMID:36948630 | DOI:10.1253/circj.CJ-22-0805

Increased major bleeding incidence in atrial fibrillation patients with apixaban: a review of Japanese post-marketing surveillance studies of direct oral anticoagulants
AbstractLarge-scaled post-marketing surveillance studies (PMSSs) of 4 direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) for stroke prevention in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF) were conducted since 2011 in Japan, and the results of the last one have recently been published. Each reported a more than acceptable ischemic stroke prevention. The major bleeding rates were also acceptably low and comparable to each other in the PMSSs of dabigatran (J-dabigatran), rivaroxaban (XAPASS), and edoxaban (ETNA-AF-Japan). However, the incidence in PMSS of apixaban (STANDARD) was more than double the others. This finding appeared to contradict th...

IJERPH, Vol. 20, Pages 5058: Major Causes of Death among Older Adults after the Great East Japan Earthquake: A Retrospective Study
Tomotaka Sobue This retrospective study investigated the 3-year impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE) of 2011 on deaths due to neoplasm, heart disease, stroke, pneumonia, and senility among older adults in the primarily affected prefectures compared with other prefectures, previous investigations having been more limited as regards mortality causes and geographic areas. Using death certificates issued between 2006 and 2015 (n = 7,383,253), mortality rates (MRs) and risk ratios (RRs) were calculated using a linear mixed model with the log-transformed MR as the response variable. The model included interact...

Effects of carotid revascularization on cognitive function and brain functional connectivity in carotid stenosis patients with cognitive impairment: a pilot study
CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that carotid revascularization, including CEA and CAS, might improve cognitive function based on brain FC in the DMN in carotid stenosis patients with CI.PMID:36905664 | DOI:10.3171/2023.1.JNS222804

< em > In-vitro < /em > antioxidant, lipoxygenase inhibitory, and < em > in-vivo < /em > muscle relaxant potential of the extract and constituent isolated from < em > Diospyros kaki < /em > (Japanese Persimmon)
This study excellently rationalizes the traditional usage of D. kaki in curing various diseases. Furthermore, the docking results indicate, that the isolated compound fits well into the active site of the lipoxygenase, and makes strong interactions with the target protein.PMID:36895410 | PMC:PMC9989937 | DOI:10.1016/j.heliyon.2023.e13816

Association between ambient temperature and cause-specific cardiovascular disease admissions in Japan: A nationwide study
CONCLUSIONS: This study indicated that cold and heat exposure could increase the risk of hospital admissions for CVD, varying depending on the cause-specific categories, which may provide new evidence to reduce the burden of CVD.PMID:36871945 | DOI:10.1016/j.envres.2023.115610
