Zika Virus Replicates in the Vagina of Mice with Intact Interferon Signaling
J Virol. 2022 Aug 30:e0121922. doi: 10.1128/jvi.01219-22. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTZika virus (ZIKV) is unusual among flaviviruses in its ability to spread between humans through sexual contact, as well as by mosquitoes. Sexual transmission has the potential to change the epidemiology and geographic range of ZIKV compared to mosquito-borne transmission and potentially could produce distinct clinical manifestations, so it is important to understand the host mechanisms that control susceptibility to sexually transmitted ZIKV. ZIKV replicates poorly in wild-type mice following subcutaneous inoculation, so most ZIKV patho...

Association of Progestogens and Venous Thromboembolism Among Women of Reproductive Age
CONCLUSION: Among reproductive-aged women using one of seven progestogens, only use of norethindrone acetate and medroxyprogesterone acetate-considered higher-dose progestogens-was significantly associated with increased odds of incident acute VTE. The roles of progestogen type, dose, and indication for use warrant further study.PMID:35926206 | DOI:10.1097/AOG.0000000000004896

Prevalence and Incidence of Sexually Transmitted Infection in Injectable Progestin Contraception Users in South Africa
DISCUSSION: Among South African participants enrolled in VOICE, DMPA-IM and NETEN users differed in prevalence of HSV-2 at baseline but did not differ in the incidence of chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, syphilis, or HSV-2 infection. Differential HIV-1 acquisition, previously demonstrated in this cohort, does not appear to be explained by differential STI acquisition. However, the high incidence of multiple STIs reinforces the need to accelerate access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services.PMID:35669097 | PMC:PMC9165437 | DOI:10.3389/frph.2021.668685

Depo Medroxyprogesterone (DMPA) Promotes Papillomavirus Infections but Does Not Accelerate Disease Progression in the Anogenital Tract of a Mouse Model
Viruses. 2022 May 6;14(5):980. doi: 10.3390/v14050980.ABSTRACTContraceptives such as Depo-medroxyprogesterone (DMPA) are used by an estimated 34 million women worldwide. DMPA has been associated with increased risk of several viral infections including Herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2) and Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). In the current study, we used the mouse papillomavirus (MmuPV1) anogenital infection model to test two hypotheses: (1) contraceptives such as DMPA increase the susceptibility of the anogenital tract to viral infection and (2) long-term contraceptive administration induces more advanced disease at the anog...

Menopausal Hormone Therapy and Breast Cancer
Cancer J. 2022 May-Jun 01;28(3):169-175. doi: 10.1097/PPO.0000000000000601.ABSTRACTAssociations of estrogen-alone and estrogen plus progestin with breast cancer incidence and related mortality are reviewed from observational studies (The Collaborative Group on Hormonal Factors in Breast Cancer and The Million Women Study, 2019) and the Women's Health Initiative's (2020) two randomized trials evaluating conjugated equine estrogen alone, for women with prior hysterectomy or with medroxyprogesterone acetate. Findings are generally concordant for estrogen plus progestin use with both observational and randomized studies report...
