Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress contribute to cross-generational toxicity of benzo(a)pyrene in Danio rerio
This study evaluated the role of mitochondria, which are maternally inherited, in the cross-generational toxicity of benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), a model PAH and known mitochondrial toxicant. Mature female zebrafish (F0) were fed diets containing 0, 12.5, 125, or 1250 μg BaP/g at a feed rate of 1% body weight twice/day for 21 days. These females were bred with unexposed males, and the embryos (F1) were collected for subsequent analyses. Maternally-exposed embryos exhibited altered mitochondrial function and metabolic partitioning (i.e. the portion of respiration attributable to different cellular processes), as evidenced by in v...

Uncovering associations between gender nonconformity, psychosocial factors, and mental health in adolescents: a birth cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Persistent gender nonconformity during adolescence is associated with subsequent mental health. Psychosocial factors play a vital mediating role in this association, highlighting the essential need for social intervention and change to reduce stigmatization and ameliorate mental health challenges.PMID:37721216 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291723002623

Trends in consultations and prescribing for rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases: an electronic primary care records study
CONCLUSION: Pandemic-associated restrictions led to fewer primary care consultations and relative increases in analgesic prescribing, including strong opioids, for RMDs in the UK. Policymakers must consider the impact of these changes in future healthcare resource planning.PMID:37722859 | DOI:10.3399/BJGP.2022.0648

Performance Validity Testing on the NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery: Base Rates of Failed Embedded Validity Indicators in the Adult Normative Sample
CONCLUSIONS: Multivariable EVIs requiring ≥ 4 failures using liberal cutoffs or ≥ 3 failures using conservative cutoffs had acceptable false-positive rates (i.e., < 10%) using both age-adjusted standard scores and demographically adjusted T-scores. These multivariable EVIs could be applied to large data sets with NIHTB-CB data to screen for potentially invalid test performances.PMID:37718664 | DOI:10.1093/arclin/acad071

Canadian Blood Services traceback investigation of a suspected case of transfusion-transmitted malaria
CONCLUSION: This was a probable transfusion-transmitted malaria (TTM) case from an eligible donor who in retrospect was found to have unrecognized, asymptomatic, semi-immune malaria infection, and who was potentially infectious. Blood donor lack of recall of prior malaria infection does not negate the risk of TTM from those who have lived in malaria-endemic countries.PMID:37715564 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17549

Genetic dissection of root architecture in Ethiopian sorghum landraces
This study quantified genetic variation in root system architecture (root number, angle, length and dry mass) within a diversity panel of 1771 Ethiopian sorghum landraces and identified 22 genomic regions associated with the root variations. The root system architecture (RSA) of crop plants influences adaptation to water-limited conditions and determines the capacity of a plant to access soil water and nutrients. Four key root traits (number, angle, length and dry mass) were evaluated in a diversity panel of 1771 Ethiopian sorghum landraces using purpose-built root chambers. Significant genetic variation was observed in al...

Human PLCG2 Haploinsufficiency Results in a Novel NK Cell Immunodeficiency
CONCLUSIONS: PLCG2 haploinsufficiency represents a distinct syndrome from previous variants characterized by NK cell immunodeficiency with herpes virus susceptibility, expanding the spectrum of PLCG2-related disease.PMID:37714437 | DOI:10.1016/j.jaci.2023.09.002

Features of Knee and Multi-joint Osteoarthritis by Sex and Race/Ethnicity: A Preliminary Analysis in the Johnston County Health Study
CONCLUSION: Preliminary findings in the diverse JoCoHS cohort suggest more lower extremity predominant MJOA in men compared to women. Women and Black participants had more KOA features and more severe symptoms. Hispanic participants appear to have higher pain and symptoms scores despite having fewer structural changes. Studies in diverse populations are needed to understand the burden of OA.PMID:37714542 | DOI:10.3899/jrheum.2023-0479

Neighborhood park access and park characteristics are associated with weight status in youth
This study investigated park access and park quality in the context of childhood obesity. Participants were 20,638 children ages 6-17y from a large primary care health system. Analyses tested associations of park access and park characteristics with children's weight status, and sociodemographic interactions. Both park access and the quality of nearest park were associated with a lower odds of having obesity. Park quality interacted with age, sex, and income. Findings suggest park access is important for supporting a healthy weight in children. Park quality may be most important among 12-14-year-olds, girls, and higher inc...
