A pediatric case series of catastrophic gastrointestinal complications of posttransplant lymphoproliferative disease with increasing incidence, high association with coronavirus disease 2019, higher mortality, and a plea for early endoscopy to prevent late fatal outcome
ConclusionSince 80% of our patients had exposure to coronavirus, a potential relationship might be suggested between the two. Furthermore, as we witnessed in one case, urgent endoscopic investigation in immunocompromised patients presenting with gastrointestinal symptoms can improve the clinical outcomes and therefore should be considered for early diagnosis of posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder.

Summary: personal protective equipment in GI endoscopy
GI endoscopy places physicians at risk for various occupational exposures, including infectious pathogens, hazardous chemicals, and radiation injury. Accordingly, both universal and risk-specific personal protective equipment (PPE) have been developed to mitigate the risk of occupational exposure. The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, in particular, raised awareness of the critical need for effective PPE practices and spurred a rapid expansion of research to guide PPE selection, use, and stewardship.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Pandemic Lifestyle Changes May Have Influenced Small Bowel Microbial Composition and Microbial Resistance
ConclusionsThese findings suggest the small bowel microbiome underwent significant changes during the pandemic, in COVID-19-negative individuals. Given the key roles of the small bowel microbiota in host physiology, this may have implications for human health.

The Direct Impact of the COVID ‐19 Pandemic on Rhinology Practice
ConclusionsCOVID-19 significantly affected the number of patients seen, virtual visit encounters, nasal endoscopies, and imaging utilization. Further research is needed to determine if patient outcomes were impacted and if these changes in practice will persist. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

Aerosol protection using modified N95 respirator during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy: a randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: This modified N95 respirator reduced the number of particles, especially 0.3-µm particles, generated during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.PMID:37430403 | DOI:10.5946/ce.2023.018

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the performance of endoscopy in the Tohoku region of Japan
CONCLUSIONS: This is the most comprehensive survey on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the performance of endoscopy and the resulting diagnosis of cancer in Japan. Understanding the magnitude of the decline in endoscopic examinations and cancer detection due to the pandemic is critical to understanding how many people will ultimately be affected and establishing a strategy for providing endoscopy during national emergencies.PMID:37273519 | PMC:PMC10235797 | DOI:10.1002/deo2.249

Real-world implementation of non-endoscopic triage testing for Barrett ’s oesophagus during COVID-19
ConclusionsCytosponge-biomarker tests enabled targeting of endoscopy services to higher-risk individuals, whereas those with TFF3 negative ultra-short segments could be reconsidered regarding their Barrett ’s oesophagus status and surveillance requirements. Long-term follow-up will be important in these cohorts.

Presence of SARS-CoV-2 in abdominal tissues and biologic fluids during abdominal surgery: a systematic review
ConclusionAlthough a rare occurrence, SARS-CoV-2 can be found in the abdominal tissues and fluids. It seems that the presence of the virus in the abdominal tissues or fluids is more likely in patients with severe disease. Protective measures should be employed in the operating room to protect the staff when operating patients with COVID-19.

The impact of COVID-19 on liver transplantation: challenges and perspectives
Therap Adv Gastroenterol. 2023 May 10;16:17562848231171452. doi: 10.1177/17562848231171452. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTThe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic presented unique challenges to patients with decompensated cirrhosis awaiting transplant, with respect to accessing medical facilities for routine clinic visits, imaging, laboratory workup, or endoscopies. There was a delay in organ procurement that led to a decrease in the number of liver transplants (LTs) and an increase in the morality of waitlisted patients at the beginning of the pandemic. LT numbers later equalized to pre-pandemic numbers due to combined...
