The use of personal protective equipment in endoscopy: What should the endoscopist wear during a pandemic?
Expert Rev Gastroenterol Hepatol. 2021 Nov 25. doi: 10.1080/17474124.2021.2011213. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Endoscopists are at high risk of exposure and nosocomial transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2 virus) when performing endoscopic procedures due to the highly aerosol generating nature of these procedures. At present there is still no consensus among endoscopists with regards to the type of protective equipment to be worn by healthcare workers, when performing endoscopy during the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.AREAS COVERED: This review encompasses a summ...

Impact of Coronavirus Disease 2019 on the Diagnosis and Therapy for Barrett ’s Esophagus and Esophageal Cancer in the United States
Barrett ’s esophagus (BE) is a precancerous condition in which normal squamous esophageal mucosa is replaced by specialized intestinal metaplasia.1 It is the main risk factor for esophageal adenocarcinoma. Patients who are high risk for BE and who meet screening criteria are eligible for endoscopy.2 If dy splastic BE is found, then patients undergo ablation therapy, which can decrease the progression to advanced neoplasia.3,4

Evaluation of YouTube laparoscopic hysterectomy videos as educational materials during the COVID-19 era using the LAParoscopic surgery Video Educational GuidelineS (LAP-VEGaS) and LAP-VEGaS video assessment tool
J Obstet Gynaecol. 2021 Oct 27:1-6. doi: 10.1080/01443615.2021.1962823. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWith increasing numbers of laparoscopic hysterectomies, surgical trainees are compelled to learn more about endoscopy. Owing to coronavirus disease-related social distancing requirements, online education has gained prominence. Here, we aimed to investigate the laparoscopic hysterectomy video quality on YouTube using the LAParoscopic surgery Video Educational GuidelineS (LAP-VEGaS). YouTube was searched on June 7, 2020 using 'laparoscopic hysterectomy'. Three examiners evaluated videos using Global Operative Assessment of ...

Strategy for Safe Bronchoscopy during COVID pandemic
Ann Thorac Surg. 2021 Oct 19:S0003-4975(21)01747-1. doi: 10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.09.034. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAerosol generating procedures are avoided for COVID-19 patients to lower the risk of transmission to healthcare providers. However, when bronchoscopy is indicated, it remains unclear if the procedure performed under general anesthesia leads to contamination of the surroundings and if standard endoscopy reprocessing methods are effective in eradicating SARS-CoV-2. We share our experience of bronchoscopic retrieval of airway foreign body under general anesthesia in a patient tested positive for novel 2019 ...

Objective Assessment of Aerosolization During Transnasal Endoscopy: A Systematic Review
CONCLUSIONS: The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has informed many considerations regarding patient and provider safety. It is valuable to understand the risk during outpatient otolaryngology procedures through the quantification of aerosolization. There are several effective methods to control aerosolization during these procedures. The findings of this systematic review will inform appropriate precautions to protect against spread of infectious agents by aerosolization.PMID:34637376 | DOI:10.1177/01945998211050632
