Progress Toward Poliomyelitis Eradication - Afghanistan, January 2022-June 2023
This report describes activities and progress toward polio eradication in Afghanistan during January 2022-June 2023. Two WPV1 cases were reported during January-December 2022 and five during January-June 2023 (as of August 26), all from three provinces in the southeast and east regions bordering Pakistan. All five 2023 patients had reportedly received ≥16 oral poliovirus vaccine doses. WPV1 was detected in sewage samples from a site in the south region in May 2023 and one in the north region in June 2023, the first detections since February 2021 and March 2020, respectively. Restrictions on house-to-house vaccination lim...

Can variants, reinfection, symptoms and test types affect COVID-19 diagnostic performance? A large-scale retrospective study of AG-RDTs during circulation of Delta and Omicron variants, Czechia, December 2021 to February 2022
ConclusionSensitivity for Omicron was lower in subgroups that may become more common if SARS-CoV-2 becomes an endemic virus.PMID:37733239 | DOI:10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2023.28.38.2200938

A Ruptured Cystic Echinococcosis in the Gallbladder and Intra/Extrahepatic Biliary Tract, Radiological and Surgical Imaging Findings
Turkiye Parazitol Derg. 2023 Sep 18;47(3):200-203. doi: 10.4274/tpd.galenos.2023.65265.ABSTRACTCystic echinococcosis is a common parasitic infestation that can still cause serious complications in endemic areas. Intrabiliary rupture is a well-defined complication, but rupture into the gallbladder is rare. The disease may present with cholecystitis and cholangitis. Clinicians and radiologists working in the emergency room will find the management of the disease much easier if they become familiar with the clinical and radiological findings of the cyst. In this article, a 28-year-old male admitted to the emergency department...

Global Bibliometric Analysis of Leishmaniasis Literature for the Last 20 Years and Investigating the Contribution of T ürkiye
CONCLUSION: The number of publications, especially in endemic areas, was found to be limited other than Brazil. Studies in this area should be supported to ensure the eradication of the disease.PMID:37724362 | DOI:10.4274/tpd.galenos.2023.76376

Distinctive Arbutin-Containing Markers: Chemotaxonomic Significance and Insights Into the Evolution of Proteaceae Phytochemistry
Chem Biodivers. 2023 Sep 19:e202301112. doi: 10.1002/cbdv.202301112. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNatural products isolation studies of eight endemic Tasmanian Proteaceae species - Agastachys odorata, Persoonia juniperina, Hakea megadenia, Hakea epiglottis, Orites diversifolius, Orites acicularis,Orites revolutus, and Telopea truncata - and three endemic Australian Proteaceae species Banksia serrata, Banksia praemorsa, and Banksia marginata were undertaken. Two previously unreported glycoside-derived natural products were identified, in addition to four other tremendously rare arbutin esters. The results of this study prov...

Long-Term Efficacy of Insecticidal Wall Painting for Controlling Visceral Leishmaniasis Vectors in Bangladesh
This study is the extension of our recent IWP study for VL vector management in Bangladesh, which was undertaken in seven highly VL endemic villages of the Mymensingh district with a 12-month follow-up. In this 24-months follow-up study, we collected sand flies additionally at 15, 18, 21, and 24 months since the interventions from the IWP and control (where the program did routine IRS) clusters to examine the longevity of the efficacy of IWP on sand fly density reduction and mortality. The difference-in-differences regression models were used to estimate the effect of IWP on sand fly reduction against Program IRS. The IWP ...

The relevance of clinical and epidemiological correlation in the early diagnosis of histoplasmosis: report of two clinical cases in Popay án, Colombia
Biomedica. 2023 Aug 31;43(Sp. 1):20-31. doi: 10.7705/biomedica.6782.ABSTRACTHistoplasmosis is an endemic mycosis in Colombia. Here we present two cases in the Cauca department, to indicate the clinical impact of histoplasmosis delayed diagnosis and treatment when its epidemiology is unknown. Informed consent was requested to review patients’ medical records and case report publication. The first case was a patient diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus and generalized presence of skin lesions. Initially, these lesions were diagnosed as herpes, but a postmortem diagnosis confirmed histoplasmosis through fungal cultur...

Essential Oils from Different Parts of Magnolia laevifolia: Chemical Constituents and Insecticidal Activities against Liposcelis bostrychophila
This study extracted EOs from leaves, flowers, carpels and seeds of M. laevifolia. The common and major compound of EOs was isocapnell-9-en-8-one, which was present at 17.7 to 91.6% in these four parts We found no regular pattern in the composition of EO in terms of parts and collection time according to principal component analysis. The contact and repellent activities of EOs against the booklouse were then conducted. Leaves and flowers' EOs collected in the flowering stage had the best contact toxicity. The percent repellency values of the EOs from different parts of M. laevifolia reached above 80% after 2 and 4 h exposu...
