Teal Pumpkins Help Make Halloween Food Allergy-Friendly
DRACUT (CBS) — One in thirteen kids has a potentially life-threatening food allergy, which can make Halloween downright frightening. But this year, there’s a way to tell which homes are safe for all kids: Teal pumpkins. Instead of carving, pumpkins, Joan Powers and her kids – 5-year-old Jack and 4-year-old Tessa of Dracut, are painting their pumpkins. Teal is the color of food allergy awareness, something the Powers family knows a lot about. Jack is allergic to synthetic food dye — anything that has a color with a number after it. Tessa is allergic to shellfish. There’s not much to worry about with a shel...

Effects of antioxidant supplements and nutrients on patients with asthma and allergies
Asthma and allergic diseases have become a worldwide public health concern because of their increased prevalence. Despite decades of research on risk factors, the causes of these disorders are poorly understood. They are thought to develop through complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors. Because pulmonary and systemic oxidative stress increase inflammatory responses relevant to asthma and allergy, dietary or vitamin supplementation with antioxidants (a broad and varied category) has been proposed as an approach to reducing asthma incidence or morbidity. Meta-analyses of observational epidemiologic st...

Probiotics in Curing Allergic and Inflammatory Conditions - Research Progress and Futuristic Vision.
CONCLUSION: Present review gives an insight towards potent utility of this branch of beneficial microbial therapy in allergy and inflammations, which is still in the emerging phase and more scientific evidences need to be explored regarding exploration of the mechanisms of action, further experimental trials and validation of controlled clinical studies in humans along with designing novel strategies for monitoring the possible microbial changes in their composition and metabolism associated with their interaction upon host immune system. Food Allergy Detection Device Could Remove Danger Of Dining Out
BOSTON (CBS) – Clare Maloney-Kolenberg is high school junior from Winchester who is looking forward to traveling to Spain on an exchange program with her Spanish class. But that excitement is coupled with a bit of anxiety due to her food allergies. “I’m allergic to tree nuts, peanuts and sesame,” she told WBZ-TV. It’s a list that can make dining out a bit dicey, even in familiar restaurants near home.  But once you add unfamiliar foods and a language barrier, that increases the odds of a reaction. That’s exactly what happened when Clare ordered ice cream on a trip to Germany with her family. “All of a s...

Are Registration of Disease Codes for Adult Anaphylaxis Accurate in the Emergency Department?
CONCLUSIONS: In case of anaphylaxis, more patients were registered inaccurately under other allergy-related codes and symptom-related codes rather than accurately under anaphylaxis disease codes. Cardiovascular symptoms, severe symptoms, and epinephrine treatment were factors associated with accurate registration with anaphylaxis disease codes in patients with anaphylaxis. Allergic Contact Dermatitis To Fentanyl TTS With Good Tolerance To Systemic Fentanyl.
CONCLUSION: We present the case of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) due to hypersensitivity to fentanyl with good tolerance to buprenorphine. Positive PT in this patient suggests a type IV hypersensitivity mechanism. Allergic reactions to opioids are frequently immediate, but delayed reactions could appear, especially when the drug is administered topically. PMID: 31131754 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Drug Allergy: Clinical Aspects, Diagnosis, Mechanisms, Structure-Activity, Relationships, Second Edition
The second edition of the book Drug Allergy is a comprehensive textbook that encompasses the most current knowledge on drug allergy and hypersensitivity. The authors note that “the general applicability of drug allergy in modern medicine in itself emphasizes the need for an integrated text that treats the subject in its own right.” The need to update the first edition is described as owing to the continued development and innovation of biological and targeted therapie s with application to cancer, autoimmunity, and metabolic disorders, with increased adverse effects and capable of inducing hypersensitivity and allergic reactions.

Allergy-cancer connection discovered
While many are stocking up on allergy medicine in preparation for spring, a new study from researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center has uncovered a new connection between allergy and cancer that could potentially lead to therapies involving common antihistamines.Recently published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, the study was led by Daniel H. Conrad, Ph.D., member of the Cancer Cell Signaling research program at Massey and professor of microbiology and immunology at the VCU School of Medicine, with substantial contributions from Ph.D.

Immunoglobulin Glycosylation Effects in Allergy and Immunity
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe aim of this review will be to familiarize the reader with the general area of antibody (Ab) glycosylation and to summarize the known functional roles of glycosylation and how glycan structure can contribute to various disease states with emphasis on allergic disease.Recent FindingsBoth immunoglobulin (Ig) isotype and conserved Fc glycosylation sites often dictate the downstream activity of an Ab where complexity and degree of glycosylation contribute to its ability to bind Fc receptors (FcRs) and activate complement. Most information on the effects of glycosylation center on IgG in cancer thera...
