The multifaceted role of mast cells in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis
Clin Exp Rheumatol. 2023 Sep 7. doi: 10.55563/clinexprheumatol/eontou. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMast cells (MC) are tissue duelling cells playing an active role in both innate and adaptive immune system. They act as first players in different microbial infections and exert a crucial role in allergy, chronic inflammation, fibrosis, and rheumatic diseases (RD), including rheumatoid arthritis (RA). MC are normally present in human synovia and they increase in the joints of RA patients, contributing to inflammatory and remodelling processes. Due to their great plasticity and multifunctionality, MC exert a wide range of ro...

Real-World Safety and Efficacy of Biosimilar CT-P13 in Patients with Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases: Integrated Analysis of Three Japanese Prospective Observational Studies
ConclusionsThe integrated analysis of a large number of patients detected no new safety signals with long-term CT-P13 treatment. Efficacy in rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, Crohn ’s disease, and ulcerative colitis cases was confirmed in biologic-naïve patients and switched patients from the originator infliximab or other biologics.

Defining remission in asthma care
Treatments for asthma continue to evolve and with the development of biologics, we are now entering an arena where some patients appear to have their asthma symptoms disappear entirely. This dramatic improvement in a chronic disease is reminiscent of remission in other chronic illnesses, such as rheumatoid arthritis, but until now there has been no accepted definition for remission in asthma. In this issue of Annals, a workgroup that involved asthma experts from North America have put together a list of 6 criteria that they have defined as indicating remission of asthma.

Autoimmunity to synovial extracellular matrix proteins in patients with postinfectious Lyme arthritis
CONCLUSION Autoreactive, proinflammatory CD4+ T cells and autoantibodies develop to ECM proteins in a subgroup of postinfectious LA patients who have specific HLA-DR alleles. Rather than the traditional molecular mimicry model, we propose that epitope spreading provides the best explanation for this example of infection-induced autoimmunity.FUNDING Supported by National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases R01-AI101175, R01-AI144365, and F32-AI125764; National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases K01-AR062098 and T32-AR007258; NIH grants P41-GM104603, R24-GM134210, S10-RR020946, S10-OD010724...

Joint and Soft Tissue Injections
Am Fam Physician. 2023 Aug;108(2):151-158.ABSTRACTJoint and soft tissue injections can be divided into two primary categories: diagnostic and therapeutic. Diagnostic injections facilitate a diagnosis by using a local anesthetic to identify the site of pain or through fluid aspiration for analysis. Therapeutic injections are categorized by the type of injectate and include corticosteroids, hyaluronic acid, dextrose prolotherapy, and platelet-rich plasma. Diagnostic and therapeutic injections are most accurate under direct visualization. Corticosteroid injections help treat adhesive capsulitis and tenosynovitis but are not r...
