Intergenerational Impacts of Maternal Stress on Early Childhood Atopy in Black Americans
ConclusionFailure to replicate previous findings suggests that the maternal stress –offspring atopy relationship is complex. Future studies must examine the unique stressors in Black Americans, as well as caregiving as a potential protective factor.

What Are Some Indications for Using Dexamethasone?
Discussion Corticosteroids are a group of drugs which can be naturally or synthetically produced. Naturally occurring substances are produced in the adrenal gland, and are protein-bound (primarily corticosteroid-binding globulin and albumin). In the target tissues, they may need to be converted to an active substance. They are then reduced, oxidized, hydroxylated or conjugated as measures to inactivate them. Synthetic steroids have less protein binding and depending on their structure are more or less resistant to inactivation. Prednisone is the glucocorticoid most often used for treatment, especially as it has a short hal...

What are Common Causes of Anaphylaxis?
Discussion Anaphylaxis is a potentially life-threatening hypersensitivity reaction of the body. Usually anaphylaxis is IgE mediated but complement-mediated immune complex reactions or IgG mediated reactions can cause anaphylaxis. Usually mucous membranes or skin are involved, but it is a systemic disease process with at least 2 systems involved (respiratory is second most common followed by gastrointestinal system). The epidemiology is difficult to discern but the estimated incidence is about 50-112 episodes per 100,000 person-years and estimated prevalence is 0.3-5.1%. There is data supporting an increased incidence. Over...

Impact of Air Pollution on Allergic Rhinitis and Asthma: Consensus Statement by Indian Academy of Pediatrics
Indian Pediatr. 2021 May 3:S097475591600321. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTJUSTIFICATION: Rising air pollution is an ever-growing threat to many human diseases. Poor air quality has been directly correlated with respiratory allergies with a disproportionate affection among the pediatric age group. A clear understanding of common air pollutants and their potential contribution in allergic rhinitis and asthma is lacking.OBJECTIVE: To formulate a consensus statement for appropriate understanding among pediatricians and general practitioners about the effects of air pollution on respiratory allergies and their prevention.PROCE...

Oral immunotherapy in food allergies: A practical update for pediatricians
Arch Pediatr. 2021 Apr 12:S0929-693X(21)00050-6. doi: 10.1016/j.arcped.2021.03.006. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFood oral immunotherapy (OIT) is a promising treatment for persistent and severe food allergies (FAs) in children, but also for accelerating tolerance to cow's milk and cooked egg in young children. In the near future, pediatricians will increasingly encounter severely allergic children undergoing FA-OIT. FA-OIT consists in daily ingestion of increasing doses of the allergen during the up-dosing phase, and ingestion of a constant dose during the maintenance phase. The global aim is to increase the reactive thre...

Parental Anxiety and Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms in Pediatric Food Allergy
Conclusions  This study highlights the need for greater awareness of mental health in parents of children with food allergy. The study also indicates that factors impacting on parents ’ perception of threat may be most strongly predictive of psychological outcomes, warranting further research. Finally, the study indicates that intolerance of uncertainty may be a promising target for psychological interventions within this population.
