2013 was a year of varying emotion in Boston—from the tragedy of the marathon bombings to the elation of the first World Series victory at Fenway Park in nearly a century. And if the past 12 months have taught me anything, it’s that learning to appreciate the good moments and figuring out how to stay strong during the difficult times are what truly define our strength of character. It’s an important life lesson, and one that stayed with me as I compiled the top Thriving stories of 2013. Perforated duodenal ulcer: An unusual manifestation of allergic eosinophilic gastroenteritis.
We present such a case in a teenager who presented with peritonitis. After exploration and operative repair of his ulcer, he continued to experience intermittent abdominal pain, and further evaluation revealed eosinophilic gastroenteritis in the setting of multiple food allergies. His EGE resolved after adhering to a restrictive diet. Both duodenal ulcers and EGE are very rarely seen in pediatric patients. EGE has a variable presentation depending on the layer(s) of bowel wall affected and the segment of the gastrointestinal tract that is involved. Once diagnosed, it may respond to dietary changes in patients with recogniz...

6,000-year-old track record for healing leaky gut
When I was traveling in India, I had the privilege of studying Ayurvedic medicine with traditional Master Healers. Surrounded by lakes, oceans and mountains, Kerala, India, is the birthplace of Ayurveda medicine. My plane landed in Mumbai. From there, I made the 800-mile trip to Kerala down on the southwestern-most tip of the Indian peninsula. With origins dating back 6,000 years, Kerala is the birthplace of Ayurvedic medicine. I spent a lot of time at the AyurMana or “ancient healing house.” This is the oldest existing school of Ayurvedic medicine in the world. It was there that I observed how quickly Ayurved...

Pollution may increase diabetes risk
Conclusion This German study looked at the relationship between air pollution and proximity to the nearest road at the child’s birth address, and the child’s insulin resistance when they were aged 10. Though links were found between increasing levels of nitrogen dioxide and levels of particles less than 10 micrometres in diameter and increasing insulin levels at age 10, there are important limitations to bear in mind: Though the researchers have attempted to adjust for many potential confounders, it is difficult to conclude that the air pollution at the birth address has directly caused the child’s insulin resista...

Eosinophilic esophagitis in patients with esophageal atresia and chronic dysphagia.
We present 4 cases of patients with EA who complained of dysphagia and the diagnosis of Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) was made, ages ranging from 9 to 16 years. Although our patients were on acid suppression years after their EA repair, they presented with acute worsening of dysphagia. Esophogastroduodenoscopy and/or barium swallow did not show stricture and biopsies revealed elevated eosinophil counts consistent with EoE. Two of 4 patients improved symptomatically with the topical steroids. It is important to note that all our patients have asthma and 3 out of 4 have tested positive for food allergies. One of our patient...

Hand-Me-Down Hazard: Flame Retardants in Discarded Foam Products
This study also found the highest body burdens among black girls.Researchers have also found that low-income residences tend to have higher levels of flame retardants in dust.44 Little has been published on levels of newer flame retardants in the bodies or homes of lower-income populations. Few hard data exist to explain these disparities in flame retardant exposures, says Ami Zota, an assistant professor at George Washington University’s Department of Environmental and Occupational Health. It is possible that the physical weathering and crumbling of treated foam in older or cheaper furniture, which is more often found i...

Initial experience of follow up of patients after the endovascular treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms using contrast-enhanced ultrasound
Conclusion We have observed a 100% consistency in the result of 25 examinations which used both methods. Based on the comparisons between CEUS and CTAG performed so far, CEUS seems to be a reliable method which could be used within the framework of dispensary care for patients after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). CEUS seems to be sensitive enough to detect endoleak. However, to be able to provide a reliable evaluation, a larger set of patients and longer-term experience are needed, specifically for the evaluation of the aneurysm sack size.

Oral application of lactic acid bacteria following treatment with antibiotics inhibits allergic airway inflammation
ConclusionsThese results showed that ST218 could alleviate allergic responses in mice treated with antibiotics, primarily through the modulation of mucosal and systemic responses rather than the restoration of the intestinal microbiota. Significance and Impact of StudyThe rise in incidence in allergies may correlate with the widespread and liberal use of antibiotics. This study affirmed that one species of LAB ST218 significantly reduces allergic airway inflammation in antibiotics‐treated mice model. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Farm dust extract increases the epithelial barrier function of bronchial epithelial cells
In this study, the effect of farm dust extracts (FDE) on barrier function and repair was investigated in primary bronchial epithelial cells (PBECs). Epithelial barrier function was analysed by assessing resistance (electric cell substrate impedance sensing and Trans Epithelial Electric Resistance (TEER)) and permeability (FITC-Dextran flux). FDE exposure induced a dose-dependent two-fold increase in barrier resistance and up to 70% reduction in permeability. An approximately 1.5-fold increased mRNA expression of occludin-1 and ZO-1 was observed after 24 hours of FDE exposure. Exposure of fully differentiated PBEC cultures ...

Lack of association between polymorphisms of the DNA base excision repair genes MUTYH and hOGG1 and keratoconus in a Polish subpopulation.
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that the c.977C>G-hOGG1 polymorphism and the c.972G>C-MUTYH polymorphism may not be linked with KC occurrence in this Polish subpopulation. PMID: 26528356 [PubMed]
