Astragaloside IV inhibits pathological functions of gastric cancer-associated fibroblasts through regulation of the HOXA6/ZBTB12 axis
This study aimed to investigate the potential mechanism of astragaloside IV in the regulation of CAF pathological functions in gastric cancer development. Homeobox A6 (HOXA6), and Zinc Finger and BTB Domain Containing 12 (ZBTB12) are highly expressed in gastric CAFs compared with normal fibroblasts (NFs) based on the GSE62740 dataset. We found that astragaloside IV-stimulated CAFs suppressed cell growth, migration, and invasiveness of gastric cancer cells. HOXA6 and ZBTB12 were downregulated after astragaloside IV treatment in CAFs. Further analysis revealed that HOXA6 or ZBTB12 knockdown in CAFs also exerted inhibitory ef...

L-ribose specific recognition surface constructed by pillar5arene-based host-guest interaction
Biosens Bioelectron. 2023 Sep 7;241:115678. doi: 10.1016/j.bios.2023.115678. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn living organisms, chiral molecules have specific chiral conformations that produce different physiological effects. Ribose is one of the components of RNA, which mainly plays a role in regulating biological activity. Inspired by the biological recognition of sugars, functional chiral surfaces for recognizing L-ribose through non-covalent interactions were constructed. In the strategy of this study, a functional chiral gold surface based on host-guest interactions was constructed through the assembly of the host mol...

Effects of Simulated Reclaimed Water on Soil Particle Sizes and Cd Adsorption and Migration in Soils at Smelting Sites
Bull Environ Contam Toxicol. 2023 Sep 13;111(3):36. doi: 10.1007/s00128-023-03800-x.ABSTRACTThis work studied the vertical migration characteristics of Cd in soil profiles from a zinc smelting site under the influence of simulated reclaimed water containing NaCl and Na2SO4. The isothermal adsorption curves of Cd in the soils of miscellaneous fill and weathered slate well fitted the Freundlich and Langmuir models, with R2 ranging from 0.991 to 0.998. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cd in the soils decreased significantly under the salt ion treatments with NaCl and Na2SO4. After leaching, the Cd concentrations in the leac...

Contribution of school meals to the recommended nutrient and energy intake of children enrolled in the National Homegrown School Feeding Program in Zaria, Nigeria
CONCLUSION: The meals served through the NHSFP contributed at least 33% of the RNI for energy, protein, iron, calcium, sodium, vitamin A, and zinc. However, they could not meet the 33% of the RNI for carbohydrates, fiber, potassium, and vitamin C. Increasing the portion sizes and the diversity of the meals can address the suboptimal contribution of the meals to the RNI for carbohydrates, fiber, potassium, and vitamin C.PMID:37704525 | DOI:10.1016/j.arcped.2023.07.004

Assessment of Potentially Toxic Metals in Fish from Lake Manyara, Northern Tanzania
Bull Environ Contam Toxicol. 2023 Sep 13;111(3):39. doi: 10.1007/s00128-023-03794-6.ABSTRACTElemental tracer concentrations of copper, lead, nickel and zinc, were assessed in the muscles of Oreochromis amphimelas and Clarias gariepinus from Lake Manyara, Tanzania, to evaluate their safety to consumers, specifically humans. Results revealed that no elemental concentrations exceeded the FAO permissible levels, indicating fish from all sites are safe for human consumption. However, based on the highest found concentration of Pb, we recommend a maximum consumption of 2.2 kg of fish from Lake Manyara per week. No significant di...

Physical properties of the low-cost CZTS absorber layer deposited by spin-coating: effect of the copper concentration associated with SCAPS-1D simulation
RSC Adv. 2023 Sep 11;13(39):27106-27115. doi: 10.1039/d3ra03996j. eCollection 2023 Sep 8.ABSTRACTFive samples of copper zinc tin sulfide (CZTS) thin films were deposited by a spin-coating technique at various copper concentrations ranging from 0.5 M to 2.5 M in steps of 0.5 M, in order to improve their stability, efficiency, performance, and reduce the production costs. The XRD patterns showed the existence of the three main characteristic peaks of CZTS (112), (220), and (312), which indicated the formation of the kesterite structure of CZTS. The gap energy of the thin films was calculated based on the derivation method us...

Antioxidant vitamin and mineral supplements for slowing the progression of age-related macular degeneration
CONCLUSIONS: Moderate-certainty evidence suggests that antioxidant vitamin and mineral supplementation (AREDS: vitamin C, E, beta-carotene, and zinc) probably slows down progression to late AMD. People with intermediate AMD have a higher chance of benefiting from antioxidant supplements because their risk of progression is higher than people with early AMD. Although low-certainty evidence suggested little effect with lutein/zeaxanthin alone compared with placebo, exploratory subgroup analyses from one large American study support the view that lutein/zeaxanthin may be a suitable replacement for the beta-carotene used in th...

Zinc Tetrapyrrole Coordinated to Imidazole Functionalized Tetracyanobutadiene or cyclohexa-2,5-diene-1,4-diylidene-expanded-tetracyanobutadiene Conjugates: Dark vs. Light-Induced Electron Transfer
Chemistry. 2023 Sep 13:e202302665. doi: 10.1002/chem.202302665. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUsing the popular metal-ligand axial coordination self-assembly approach, donor-acceptor conjugates have been constructed using zinc tetrapyrroles (porphyrin (ZnP), phthalocyanine (ZnPc), and naphthalocyanine (ZnNc)) as electron donors and imidazole functionalized tetracyanobutadiene (Im-TCBD) and Im-DCNQ) as electron acceptors. The newly formed donor-acceptor conjugates were fully characterized by a suite of physicochemical methods, including absorption and emission, electrochemistry, and computational methods. The measured bindi...

Seminal biomarkers and their correlations to semen parameters in subfertile men
CONCLUSIONS: Higher zinc and citrate levels correlated with better progressive motility, sperm morphology and TMSC. Smoking negatively impacted zinc and citrate levels, thereby affecting sperm quality. In conclusion, the inclusion of biomarkers in basic male work-up assessment would assist in identifying common deficiencies and aid in adequate replacement therapy.PMID:37700886 | PMC:PMC10493244 | DOI:10.1016/j.eurox.2023.100229

Higher cadmium and zinc accumulation in parsley (Petroselinum crispum) roots activates its antioxidants defense system
Biometals. 2023 Sep 13. doi: 10.1007/s10534-023-00529-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTParsley (Petroselinum crispum) is herb with many biological and medicinal benefits for humans. However, growth on zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) contaminated sites might get severely affected due to over accumulation of heavy metals (HM) in different plant tissues. Antioxidants play a crucial role in minimizing the negative effects of HM. The present study investigates the effects of Zn and Cd stress on P. crispum morphological parameters, enzymatic/non-enzymatic antioxidant profiling and metal accumulation in shoot/root. Plants were exposed...
