Multiple Organ Dysfunction Secondary to Herpes Simplex Virus -1 Reactivation After Treatment With Dexamethasone and Sarilumab for Covid-19 Disease
CONCLUSIONS: HSV-1 reactivation is common in COVID-19 and likely contributes to poorer clinical outcomes. The mechanism causing susceptibility to viral reactivation is not clearly defined, however, the development of critical illness induced immunosuppression via dysfunction of interferon and interleukin pathways is a likely mechanism. This effect could be perpetuated with immunosuppressant medications, although further research is needed to characterise this phenomenon.PMID:37593250 | PMC:PMC10429616 | DOI:10.2478/jccm-2023-0010

Evaluation of High-dose versus Standard-dose of Dexamethasone on Mortality among the Mechanically Ventilated COVID-19 Patients
CONCLUSION: There was no association between HD DEX and mortality among ventilated COVID-19 patients compared to SD DEX. Moreover, HD DEX is associated with detrimental effects such as prolonged ICU LOS and higher average daily BG. This study supports the use of SD DEX in ventilated COVID-19 patients.PMID:37592771 | DOI:10.2174/1574886318666230817102043

Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy Impacts Quality Of Life And Activities Of Daily Living Of Brazilian Multiple Myeloma Patients
CONCLUSION: MM patients showed a high frequency of CIPN, which affected ADL and impaired HRQoL. Early and accurate detection of CIPN and dose management in patients with thalidomide and bortezomib-based regimens should be performed to provide better treatment outcomes and avoid permanent disabilities.PMID:37592770 | DOI:10.2174/1574886318666230817162424

Mitochondrial swelling in cardiomyocytes: Insights from a murine model of Tityus serrulatus scorpion envenomation
Toxicon. 2023 Aug 16:107259. doi: 10.1016/j.toxicon.2023.107259. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTImmune system hyperactivation are involved with clinical severity and pathological alterations during scorpion envenomation. In a murine model, mice inoculated with a lethal dose of Tityus serrulatus scorpion venom presented mitochondrial swelling in cardiomyocytes, with other structures such as sarcomeres and intercalated disks preserved. Treatment with dexamethasone or knockout animals to the interleukin-1β receptor do not undergo mitochondrial changes in cardiomyocytes during envenomation.PMID:37595687 | DOI:10.1016/j.toxicon.2023.107259

Lithium prevents glucocorticoid ‑induced chondrocyte autophagy: An in vitro study
In conclusion, the present study demonstrated that lithium can prevent glucocorticoid‑induced autophagy by activating the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway and preventing the glucocorticoid‑induced decrease in chondrocyte viability.PMID:37594059 | DOI:10.3892/mmr.2023.13070
