Low-Level Laser Therapy for the Treatment of Oral Mucositis Induced by Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: The application of laser therapy results in decreased severity of oral mucositis from radiation and chemotherapy. Our study shows that the application of low-level laser therapy in the treatment of transplant mucositis has excellent efficacy in relieving the symptoms and severity of mucositis.PMID:37629703 | DOI:10.3390/medicina59081413

Systematic Review on Multilevel Analysis of Radiation Effects on Bone Microarchitecture
CONCLUSION: Overall, the radiotherapy altered bone microstructures and substantially decreases bone mechanical properties. The alteration was related to quantity and the activity of the osteoblast and osteoclast. Early detection of those most at risk for radiation-induced bone alterations could lead to better prophylactic intervention decisions.PMID:35782085 | PMC:PMC9249517 | DOI:10.1155/2022/9890633

Dose-escalated radiotherapy for clinically localized and locally advanced prostate cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Compared to conventional dose RT, dose-escalated RT probably results in little to no difference in time to death from prostate cancer, time to death from any cause, time to distant metastasis, and RT toxicities (except overall late GI toxicity). While dose-escalated RT may increase overall late GI toxicity, it may result, or probably results, in little to no difference in physical and mental quality of life, respectively.PMID:36884035 | PMC:PMC9994460 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD012817.pub2

Endometrial Cancer. Guideline of the DGGG, DKG and DKH (S3-Level, AWMF Registry Number 032/034-OL, September 2022). Part 1 with Recommendations on the Epidemiology, Screening, Diagnosis and Hereditary Factors of Endometrial Cancer, Geriatric Assessment and Supply Structures
Geburtshilfe Frauenheilkd. 2023 Aug 15;83(8):919-962. doi: 10.1055/a-2066-2051. eCollection 2023 Aug.ABSTRACTSummary The S3-guideline on endometrial cancer, first published in April 2018, was reviewed in its entirety between April 2020 and January 2022 and updated. The review was carried out at the request of German Cancer Aid as part of the Oncology Guidelines Program and the lead coordinators were the German Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics (DGGG), the Gynecology Oncology Working Group (AGO) of the German Cancer Society (DKG) and the German Cancer Aid (DKH). The guideline update was based on a systematic search and ...

Analysis and optimization of the robot setup for robotic-ultrasound-guided radiation therapy
ConclusionWe propose a robust and generic optimization scheme, which can be used to optimize the robot placement for robotic ultrasound guidance in radiation therapy. The automatic optimization further mitigates the impact of robotic ultrasound on the treatment plan quality.

Efficient Descriptor-Based Segmentation of Parotid Glands With Nonlocal Means
Conclusion: Features and location information significantly increase the segmentation accuracy. The best features highlight boundaries in the image. Significance: Our detailed analysis of several aspects of nonlocal means-based segmentation yields new insights about patch and neighborhood sizes together with the inclusion of location information. The presented approach advances the state-of-the-art in the segmentation of parotid glands for radiation therapy planning.

Is it worth to perform salvage radical prostatectomy for radio-recurrent prostate cancer? A literature review
ConclusionssRP represents a curative option with promising short- to medium-term oncological results and acceptable side effects, in high-volume institutions. In appropriately selected patients, the procedure should not be underused due to the fear of poor functional outcomes and/or complications. Prospective studies are needed to assess the long-term outcomes and to further refine patient selection criteria.

Neurocognitive Effects and Necrosis in Childhood Cancer Survivors Treated With Radiation Therapy: A PENTEC Comprehensive Review
CONCLUSIONS: This PENTEC comprehensive review establishes objective relationships between patient age, RT dose, RT volume, and MTX to subsequent risks of neurocognitive injury and necrosis. A lack of consistent RT data and outcome reporting in the published literature hindered investigation of the other predefined CNS morbidity endpoints.PMID:33810950 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijrobp.2020.11.073

Meta-optimization for fully automated radiation therapy treatment planning
Phys Med Biol. 2022 Feb 17. doi: 10.1088/1361-6560/ac5672. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: Radiation therapy treatment planning is a time-consuming process involving iterative adjustments of hyperparameters. To automate the treatment planning process, we propose a meta-optimization framework, called MetaPlanner (MP).APPROACH: Our MP algorithm automates planning by performing meta-optimization of treatment planning hyperparameters. The algorithm uses a derivative-free method (i.e. parallel Nelder-Mead simplex search) to search for weight configurations that minimize a meta-scoring function. Meta-scoring is performe...

Single-Fraction Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy to the Lung - The Knockout Punch
Clin Oncol (R Coll Radiol). 2022 Feb 24:S0936-6555(22)00088-7. doi: 10.1016/j.clon.2022.02.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis overview summarises the current evidence on efficacy and safety of single-fraction stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy (SABR) for primary lung cancers and lung metastases, in comparison with the more widely adapted multi-fraction SABR regimens. A literature search using the Medline database through PubMed was carried out using the following key words: ('stereotactic' or 'sabr' or 'sbrt'), ('radiotherapy' or 'radiation therapy'), ('lung' or 'thorax' or 'thoracic' or 'chest'), ('cancer' or 'm...
