Factors associated with depressive mood at the onset of multiple sclerosis - an analysis of 781 patients of the German NationMS cohort
CONCLUSION: Depressive symptoms need to be assessed in early MS. Patients during relapse seem especially vulnerable to depressive symptoms. Contributing factors such as fatigue, vitamin D deficiency and smoking, could specifically be targeted in future interventions and should be investigated in prospective studies.PMID:37692259 | PMC:PMC10492471 | DOI:10.1177/17562864231197309

Biotinidase Deficiency in the Second Decade with Atypical Neuroimaging Findings
Adv Biomed Res. 2023 Jun 28;12:148. doi: 10.4103/abr.abr_98_22. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTBiotinidase deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive neurometabolic disorder resulting in biotin deficiency. Our patient presented with seizures and developmental delay since infancy and was started on megavitamin supplements. At 14 years, she presented with motor regression with encephalopathy after discontinuation of vitamins. There were no skin and hair changes. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain showed bilateral symmetrical posterior putamen signal changes. Tandem mass spectroscopy showed increased methyl malonyl carniti...

Survey on APS diagnosis and antithrombotic treatment in patients with ischaemic stroke, other brain ischaemic injury or arterial thromboembolism in other sites: Communication from ISTH SSC Subcommittee on Lupus Anticoagulant/Antiphospholipid Antibodies (LA/aPL)
CONCLUSIONS: Much of the variation in practice reflects the lack of evidence-based recommendations. The survey results should inform the development of a more uniform multidisciplinary consensus approach to diagnosis and antithrombotic treatment.PMID:37391096 | DOI:10.1016/j.jtha.2023.06.020

The importance of Vitamin-D and Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio for Alzheimer's Disease
CONCLUSION: NLR was higher in AD while there was no difference between the Fazekas-0 and Fazekas-3 AD groups. Vitamin D was lower in the Fazekas-3 AD group. These data suggested that NLR increased independently of ischemia in AD. Also vitamin D deficiency could trigger ischemia in AD.PMID:37250565 | PMC:PMC10214823 | DOI:10.12669/pjms.39.3.7024

Fight Aging! Newsletter, December 12th 2022
In conclusion, selective removal of senescent dermal fibroblasts can improve the skin aging phenotype, indicating that BPTES may be an effective novel therapeutic agent for skin aging. Non-Dividing Neurons Do In Fact Become Senescent, Impairing Brain Function https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2022/12/non-dividing-neurons-do-in-fact-become-senescent-impairing-brain-function/ Cellular senescence is generally thought of as a characteristic of replicating cells; it is an end state reached when telomeres, reduced in length with each cell division, become too short. This is followed by programmed cell death ...

Myoclonus status revealing COVID 19 infection
DISCUSSION: Our patient presented with acute isolated multifocal myoclonus status without cognitive impairment. These movements were prominent, spontaneous, worsened by action, and sensitive to touch and sound. The anatomical source of this myoclonus could be cortical or subcortical despite the absence of evident EEG discharges. Several diseases can cause acute myoclonus such as severe hypoxia, metabolic disturbances, and paraneoplastic syndromes. these diagnoses were ruled out in our patient. Post-vaccinal origin was also suggested, but its accountability was not proven. Thus, the two hypothetic etiologies raised were eit...

Management of Patients at Risk for and With Left Ventricular Thrombus: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association
Circulation. 2022 Sep 15:101161CIR0000000000001092. doi: 10.1161/CIR.0000000000001092. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite the many advances in cardiovascular medicine, decisions concerning the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of left ventricular (LV) thrombus often remain challenging. There are only limited organizational guideline recommendations with regard to LV thrombus. Furthermore, management issues in current practice are increasingly complex, including concerns about adding oral anticoagulant therapy to dual antiplatelet therapy, the availability of direct oral anticoagulants as a potential alternative optio...

Scapular Stress Fracture of the Inferior Angle in an Adolescent Swimmer
We present the case of a competitive swimmer who was 14 years, 9 months old and had a 4-month history of posterior shoulder pain. She was initially evaluated by her school's trainer and completed a 2-week rehabilitation program, but pain returned with return to swimming. After feeling a "pop" while swimming with an increase in associated shoulder pain, the patient presented for medical evaluation. Plain radiographs were read as unremarkable. A formal physical therapy program resulted in increased pain, and the patient returned to clinic within 2 weeks with pain out of proportion to examination. Magnetic resonance imaging a...
