Efficacy of Statin Therapy in Post-Stroke Seizure Prophylaxis: Clues from an Observational Study of Routine Secondary Prevention Treatment
ConclusionsStatin treatment, especially with intensive-dose statins, can reduce the risk of PSS. In addition, the risk of developing PSE appears to be significantly lower for prolonged statin treatment. However, due to the observational nature of this study, more investigations are warranted to confirm its findings.

Statin effects on post-stroke epilepsy and mortality - Taiwan population-based study.

Statin Use Increases the Risk of Depressive Disorder in Stroke Patients: A Population-Based Study
This study aimed to explore the risk for depressive disorder (DD) among stroke patients with statin use. Totally, 11,218 patients who had a first-time acute hospitalization for stroke were identified from Taiwan’s Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2000. We individually followed each study subject for a 1-year period to identify those patients who were subsequently diagnosed with DD during the follow-up period. We found that the incidence rate of DD during the 1-year follow-up period was 5.52 (95% CI: 4.70~6.43) and 3.46 (95% CI: 3.08~3.88) per 100 person-years for stroke patients who were statin users and nonusers, respectively.

We read with interest the article by Kang et al which evaluated the risk for depressive disorder (DD) among stroke patients with statin use [1]. In a retrospective cohort study including 11,218 Chinese patients who had a first-time acute hospitalization for stroke in Taiwan, the authors followed each study subject for a 1-year period, finding that regular statin use was positively associated with the occurrence of DD following stroke. Their findings seem interesting, but I would like to raise 2 concerns.

People who have had strokes are at increased risk of developing seizures and epilepsy. In the article "Statin treatment reduces the risk of poststroke seizures," Guo and colleagues looked at whether treating patients who had recently had a stroke with a cholesterol-lowering "statin" medication might reduce the risk of developing seizures following the stroke.1

Statin treatment reduces the risk of poststroke seizures
Conclusions: Statin use, especially in the acute phase, may reduce the risk of poststroke early-onset seizures. In addition, statin treatment may prevent the progression of initial poststroke seizure-induced neurodegeneration into chronic epilepsy. Because of the observational nature of the study, more studies are needed to confirm the results. Classification of evidence: This study provides Class III evidence that in patients with a first-ever ischemic stroke, the early use of statins reduces the risk of early poststroke seizures.

Statins Promote Long-Term Recovery after Ischemic Stroke by Reconnecting Noradrenergic Neuronal Circuitry.
This study investigated the effects of statins on the recovery of NA neuron circuitry and its function after transient focal cerebral ischemia (tFCI). Using the wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) transgene technique combined with the recombinant adenoviral vector system, NA-specific neuronal pathways were labeled, and were identified in the locus coeruleus (LC), where NA neurons originate. Stroke-like migraine attacks in long term survivors of high grade glioma. (P1.174)
Conclusions:Stroke-like migraine attacks are difficult to treat and the pathophysiology is unknown.
