Is fruit intake associated with common carotid intima-media thickness?
ConclusionsWe found only a non-significant association between consuming>2 portions of fruit per day and ccIMT. Thus, our study could not confirm a negative effect of fruit intake on ccIMT. Age, sex, and homocysteine may confound this association.Key messagesCurrent recommendations of 2 portions of fruit per day seem adequate and do not negatively influence carotid intima-media thickness.Future studies should address confounding of the association between fruit intake and cardiovascular risk markers.

A score appraising Paleolithic diet and the risk of cardiovascular disease in a Mediterranean prospective cohort
ConclusionsOur findings suggest that the PaleoDiet may have cardiovascular benefits in participants from a Mediterranean country. Avoidance of ultra-processed foods seems to play a key role in this inverse association.

Promising Nutritional Fruits Against Cardiovascular Diseases: An Overview of Experimental Evidence and Understanding Their Mechanisms of Action
Vasc Health Risk Manag. 2021 Nov 23;17:739-769. doi: 10.2147/VHRM.S328096. eCollection 2021.ABSTRACTCardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in both developed and developing countries, affecting millions of individuals each year. Despite the fact that successful therapeutic drugs for the management and treatment of CVDs are available on the market, nutritional fruits appear to offer the greatest benefits to the heart and have been proved to alleviate CVDs. Experimental studies have also demonstrated that nutritional fruits have potential protective effects against CVDs. The ai...

Molecules, Vol. 27, Pages 1049: Coffee-Derived Phenolic Compounds Activate Nrf2 Antioxidant Pathway in I/R Injury In Vitro Model: A Nutritional Approach Preventing Age Related-Damages
essandra Bulbarelli Age-related injuries are often connected to alterations in redox homeostasis. The imbalance between free radical oxygen species and endogenous antioxidants defenses could be associated with a growing risk of transient ischemic attack and stroke. In this context, a daily supply of dietary antioxidants could counteract oxidative stress occurring during ischemia/reperfusion injury (I/R), preventing brain damage. Here we investigated the potential antioxidant properties of coffee-derived circulating metabolites and a coffee pulp phytoextract, testing their efficacy as ROS scavengers in an in vitro model...

Pinocembrin Reduces Keratinocyte Activation and Ameliorates Imiquimod-Induced Psoriasis-like Dermatitis in BALB/c Mice through the Heme Oxygenase-1/Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3 Pathway
In this study, we evaluated the effects of pinocembrin on human HaCaT keratinocytes and BALB/c mice with imiquimod- (IMQ-) induced psoriatic dermatitis. In interferon-γ- (IFN-γ-) activated HaCaT cells, pinocembrin reduced the expression of inflammatory cytokines, namely, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and keratinocyte proliferation markers, namely, keratin (K)16, K17, and Ki-67. The mechanism underlying these inhibitory effects involved the regulation of the heme oxygenase- (HO-) 1/signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) 3 pathway. In the IMQ-induced psoriatic dermatitis mouse mo...

Credit: UNHCRBy Simone GalimbertiKATHMANDU, Nepal, Apr 29 2022 (IPS) The recently disseminated Zero Draft Ministerial Declaration of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF)– the main UN event to track the member states’ progress to achieve the Agenda 2030 slated to be held in the first half of July– is a disappointment. For all its comprehensiveness, the document neglected to mention one of the most...

Tea consumption and cerebral hemorrhage risk: a meta-analysis
ConclusionsThis study suggests that daily tea consumption is related to a lower risk of cerebral hemorrhage among adults. Green tea consumption appears to be more beneficial in preventing cerebral hemorrhage. Physical activity, fruit/vegetables, and alcohol may affect the relationship between tea consumption and hemorrhagic stroke. Future studies should investigate the interplay of tea with these factors.

Treatment of diabetes mellitus has borne much fruit in the prevention of cardiovascular disease
ABSTRACTCardiovascular (CV) disease is the most alarming complication of diabetes mellitus (DM), and a strategy aiming at CV event prevention in DM has long been debated. Large landmark clinical trials have shown CV benefits of intensive glycemic control as a “legacy effect” in newly diagnosed type 2 DM (T2DM). In contrast, we have learned that excessive intervention aimed at strong glycemic control could cause unexpected CV death in patients who are resistant to treatments against hyperglycemia. It has also been shown that the comprehensive multifac torial intervention for CV risk factors that was advocated in the cur...

High blood pressure: The green fruit that raises hypertension – ‘contains a lot of salt’
HIGH blood pressure, also known as hypertension, occurs when the blood passing through the body's veins and arteries is too high. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for other forms of heart disease such as a heart attack or stroke. As a result, it is key to keep overall health high to reduce the risk of heart disease.
