Predictors of 30-day mortality among patients with stroke admitted at a tertiary teaching hospital in Northwestern Tanzania: A prospective cohort study
ConclusionStroke is associated with a high 30-day mortality rate in Northwestern Tanzania. Concerted efforts are warranted in managing patients with stroke, with particular attention to individuals with severe strokes, ECG abnormalities, and swallowing difficulties to reduce early morbidity and mortality.

Patients with Stroke and Dysphagia: Demographics and Trends in Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrotomy Tube Use in Stroke Patients in the United States from 1988-2010 (P01.219)
CONCLUSIONS: The use of PEG tubes has increased over time in US hospital admissions for acute stroke, and was associated with multiple comorbidities, greater length of stay and age > 74. This shows the increasing awareness of post-stroke dysphagia.Disclosure: Dr. Johnson has nothing to disclose. Dr. Dubinsky has received personal compensation for activities with Allergan, Inc. Early Access to a Neurologist Reduces the Rate of Missed Diagnosis in Young Strokes
Conclusions: Young adults with ischemic stroke seen at hospitals with a neurology residency had a lower missed diagnosis rate. The presence of an EM resident or a neurology teaching program was associated with a greater use of acute stroke therapies. These results support initiatives to triage young adults with suspected acute stroke to hospitals with access to neurologic expertise in the emergency department.

Tissue hypoxia during ischemic stroke: Adaptive clues from hypoxia-tolerant animal models.
We describe specific physiological and molecular adaptations employed by different animals' models of hypoxia tolerance in aquatic and terrestrial environments. We highlight how these adaptations might provide potential clues on strategies to adapt for the clinical management of tissue hypoxia during conditions such as stroke where oxygen demand fails to match the supply. Early prediction and outcome of septic encephalopathy in acute stroke patients with nosocomial coma.
CONCLUSION: High fever and severe SIRS are two early predictors of stroke patients with SE, and survival rates were worse in stroke patients with SE than those without SE. PMID: 26015818 [PubMed]

Laryngeal Elevation Velocity and Aspiration in Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients
This study aimed to explore the ability of laryngeal elevation velocity to predict aspiration in patients with acute ischemic stroke. MethodsThis was a prospective cohort study that included consecutive acute ischemic stroke patients treated at a teaching hospital during a 10-month period. Patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to confirm the diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke. Patients who were at risk of aspiration and could swallow 5 ml of diluted barium (40%, w/v) for a videofluoroscopic swallowing (VFS) study were included. The association between abnormal indices in the oral and pharyngeal phase of the V...

Depression and dynamic balance recovery among stroke survivors: A preliminary investigation
Conclusions There is a high prevalence of post-stroke depression among stroke survivors and they have poor dynamic balance. However, owing to small sample of participants in the present study, its premature to draw conclusion on the relationship between depression and dynamic balance recovery among stroke survivors from the result of this study.

Barriers to evidence-based acute stroke care in Ghana: a qualitative study on the perspectives of stroke care professionals
Conclusion Barriers from low/middle-income countries differ substantially from those in high-income countries. For evidence-based acute stroke care in low/middle-income countries such as Ghana, health policy-makers and hospital managers need to consider the contrasts and uniqueness in these barriers in designing quality improvement interventions to optimise patient outcomes.

Quality of acute stroke care in a regional Victorian hospital, Australia.
CONCLUSION: The timeliness of brain imaging and thrombolysis was comparable in the study hospital to that of the national standard, while other stroke management indicators still require improvement. Continuing efforts for improvement and revisiting possible areas of delay are warranted. PMID: 30945784 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

225 Assessment of Well-being after Stroke
ConclusionThis study highlights significant concerns from patients following stroke with regard to their memory and mood. This emphasises the importance of formal assessment of mood and memory both during admission and on an ongoing basis post discharge. A significant proportion of patients required additional help at home with family members providing the majority of this support.

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 16345: Post-Stroke Experiences and Rehabilitation Needs of Community-Dwelling Chinese Stroke Survivors: A Qualitative Study
i Liang Stroke survivors encounter significant limitations in daily life activities and face increased risk of health complications such as stroke recurrence. Considering the escalating demand for personalised community rehabilitation services, this qualitative study was conducted to understand the current recovery experiences, needs, and expectations of community-dwelling stroke survivors. Fifty stroke survivors were recruited from two tertiary teaching hospitals and community centres in two provinces in mainland China. Semi-structured interviews were carried out, and participants were asked to describe their experien...

Abstract 230: The Impact of Hospital Closures on Outcomes for Myocardial Infarction and Stroke Poster Session II
Conclusions: We found no evidence that hospital closure was associated with worse clinical outcomes for AMI or stroke for patients. Though there were increased travel times for both conditions, this was likely offset by an increase in hospital quality in the alternative hospitals. These findings should provide some reassurance to those concerned that hospital closures will lead to significantly worse patient outcomes, even for conditions for which timely receipt of treatment is critical.

The accuracy of surrogate decision makers: informed consent in hypothetical acute stroke scenarios
Conclusions: Surrogates accurately predict patient preferences for standard acute stroke treatments. However, the accuracy decreases when predicting research participation suggesting that the degree of surrogate agreement is dependent on the type of decision being made. Further research is needed to more thoroughly characterize surrogate decision-making in acute stroke situations.

Improving the one-year mortality of stroke patients: an 18-year observation in a teaching hospital.
This study determined the one-year survival rate and prognostic factors of hospitalized hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke patients from 1991 to 2008 in a teaching hospital in Taiwan. We also evaluated the improvements in the one-year mortality after stroke during an 18-year study period. Patients admitted for cerebral hemorrhage (n = 3,678) and cerebral infarction (n = 16,010), identified from an in-patient electronic database, were linked to the National Death Registry of Taiwan. Actuarial analysis was used to determine the one-year survival rates, and Cox proportional hazard regression model was used to investigate the pre...

Advance preferences regarding thrombolysis in patients at risk for stroke: a cross-sectional study
Conclusion: Advance discussion of the potential risks and benefits of thrombolysis in at-risk patients may improve decision making if thrombolysis is being considered and the patient can no longer make a decision.
