Early stroke post –heart transplant is associated with decreased survival in children
In this study we aimed to characterize early MNEs (stroke, isolated seizures not from stroke and posterior reversible leukoencephalopathy [PRES] within 1 year after primary pediatric HTx) and evaluate their impact on 1-year post-HTx survival. We hypothesized that early an MNE after HTx is associated with decreased 1-year patient survival.

ConclusionsThe protective effect of PFO repair remains unclear. However, is not associated with an increased incidence of stroke or postoperative mortality following LTx. Prognostic value of hemodynamics following treatment initiation in pulmonary arterial hypertension
Conclusions: Stroke volume index and right atrial pressure at first follow-up catheterization were the best hemodynamic predictors of death or transplantation. These variables should be further validated as treatment targets in a prospective study.

The Prognostic Value of Follow-up Hemodynamic Variables After Initial Management in Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension.
Conclusions -SVI and RAP were the hemodynamic variables independently associated with death or lung transplantation at first follow-up RHC after initial PAH treatment. These findings suggest that the SVI could be a more appropriate treatment target than the cardiac index in PAH.

Five-Year Follow-Up on Transplanted Organs From Donors After Brain Death After Acute Stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: The 5-year follow-up showed that organs from 14 brain-dead donors improved and saved 19 lives, with 17 patients receiving kidney transplants and 2 patients receiving liver transplants. Another 7 patients had only partially improved quality of life.

Reported link between diet drinks and dementia and stroke is weak
Conclusion
The researchers used data from a large ongoing cohort study to look for links between consumption of sugary and artificially sweetened drinks and risk of stroke or dementia.
This cohort study benefits from the large overall sample size, long period of data collection, careful and valid diagnostic assessments, and adjustments for a number of confounders. However, care must be taken when interpreting these results – particularly if latching on to the maximal tripled risk figures reported in the media.

ISHLT 2017: Medtronic HVAD trial misses primary endpoint, reports lowered stroke rates
Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) said today that results from the Endurance supplemental trial of its HVAD heart pump system did not meet its primary endpoint, but did report lowered stroke rates compared to standard treatment.
The trial aimed to evaluate the use of the HVAD system, which it picked up along with HeartWare last year, as a destination therapy for patients who require a left ventricular assist device and received improved blood pressure management, the Fridley, Minn.-based company said.

Previous studies have demonstrated significant differences between Asians and Caucasian white populations in their propensity for stroke, coronary artery disease, heart failure, inflammation, bleeding and thrombosis. Therefore, we hypothesized that Asian Americans with end stage heart failure undergoing treatment with durable left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) exhibit a different morbidity and mortality risk profile when compared to non-Asian and white Americans populations.
