Merck locates frozen batch of undisclosed Ebola vaccine, will donate for testing in Uganda ’s outbreak
In a revelation that may help Uganda combat its outbreak of Ebola, the pharmaceutical giant Merck has acknowledged to Science— after repeated inquiries — that it has up to 100,000 doses of an experimental vaccine for the deadly viral disease in its freezers in Pennsylvania and will donate them. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ugandan government are discussing if and how these doses can be incorporated into one or more clinical trials of other candidate Ebola vaccines that could launch as soon as next month. The Merck vaccine targets Sudan ebolavirus, the pathogen currently circulating...

Immunogenicity of rVSV ΔG-ZEBOV-GP Ebola vaccine (ERVEBO®) in African clinical trial participants by age, sex, and baseline GP-ELISA titer: A post hoc analysis of three Phase 2/3 trials
CONCLUSION: These data demonstrate that rVSVΔG-ZEBOV-GP elicits a robust and durable immune response through 12 months postvaccination in participants regardless of age, sex, or BL GP-ELISA titer. The higher immune responses observed in women and participants with pre-existing immunity are consistent with those described previously and for other vaccines. Trials were registered as follows: PREVAIL: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02344407; FLW: Pan African Clinical Trials Registry PACTR201503001057193; STRIVE: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02378753. Protocols V920-009, 011, and 018.PMID:36208978 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2022.09.037

Effects of Gamma Irradiation of Human Serum Samples from rVSV ΔG-ZEBOV-GP (V920) Ebola Virus Vaccine Recipients on Plaque-Reduction Neutralization Assays
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2021 Mar 29:tpmd201055. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.20-1055. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGamma irradiation (GI) is included in the CDC guidance on inactivation procedures to render a group of select agents and toxins nonviable. The Ebola virus falls within this group because it potentially poses a severe threat to public health and safety. To evaluate the impact of GI at a target dose of 50 kGy on neutralizing antibody titers induced by the rVSVΔG-ZEBOV-GP vaccine (V920), we constructed a panel of 48 paired human serum samples (GI-treated versus non-GI-treated) from healthy participants selected from a phase 3...

Expanding Research Capacity in Sub-Saharan Africa Through Informatics, Bioinformatics, and Data Science Training Programs in Mali
Conclusion Bioinformatics and data science training programs in developing countries necessitate incremental and collaborative strategies for their feasible and sustainable development. The progress described here covered decades of collaborative efforts centered on training and research on computationally intensive topics. These efforts laid the groundwork and platforms conducive for hosting a bioinformatics and data science training program in Mali. Training programs are perhaps best facilitated through Africa’s university systems as they are perhaps best positioned to maintain core resources during lapses in sho...

SOCS and Herpesviruses, With Emphasis on Cytomegalovirus Retinitis
Christine I. Alston1,2 and Richard D. Dix1,2* 1Department of Biology, Viral Immunology Center, Georgia State University, Atlanta, GA, United States 2Department of Ophthalmology, Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, GA, United States Suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS) proteins provide selective negative feedback to prevent pathogeneses caused by overstimulation of the immune system. Of the eight known SOCS proteins, SOCS1 and SOCS3 are the best studied, and systemic deletion of either gene causes early lethality in mice. Many viruses, including herpesviruses such as herpes simplex virus and cytomega...

Research Using Fetal Tissue
Hello HuffPo! Some of you may know me from junkscience.com or healthnewsdigest.com. My main focus here will be on science, or what passes for science these days. Many people of good will are not aware that our government spends more than $400 billion per year on R & D. Regrettably, a substantial amount of that ends of being little more than a form of academic welfare, for research that has almost no chance of ever leading to anything practical, and in many cases does not even add to so-called "basic knowledge." By way of example (and I will have many more), let's take a look at a current hot topic: Research using fetal tis...

Vaccine-Injured Child Stolen by the State and Her Caring Mother Accused of Child Abuse
Conclusion For many years, I have been writing about such cases. There are now a growing number of parents who have been falsely accused of harming their vaccine-damaged children. Sadly, this case is yet another example. Loving, caring parents are having their children taken away from them because the majority of health care professionals and social workers are burying their heads in the sand and choosing to ignore the fact that no vaccine or medication is one hundred percent safe. All vaccines have the potential to cause adverse reactions. When you have such groups as the AAPS stating, “And yet, children under the age o...
