Strategies for Reducing Perioperative Opioid Use in Foot and Ankle Surgery: Education, Risk Identification, and Multimodal Analgesia
Orthop Clin North Am. 2023 Oct;54(4):485-494. doi: 10.1016/j.ocl.2023.04.006. Epub 2023 Jun 1.ABSTRACTThere remains a high prevalence and substantial risks of opioid utilization amongst orthopedic patients. The goal of this review is to discuss strategies for responsible opioid use in the perioperative setting following foot and ankle orthopedic surgeries. We will highlight 1) education interventions, 2) risk identification, and 3) non-opioid alternatives for postoperative pain management.PMID:37718087 | DOI:10.1016/j.ocl.2023.04.006

Decreasing Post-Operative Narcotic Usage Following Total Knee Arthroplasty Requires More than Simple Education: A Blinded Randomized Controlled Trial
Orthop Clin North Am. 2023 Oct;54(4):377-382. doi: 10.1016/j.ocl.2023.06.001. Epub 2023 Jul 21.ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study was to understand if including a patient opioid education document would decrease opioid consumption following TKA. Patients were balanced between the control and intervention group based on age, sex, and date of surgery. At 5 weeks following surgery, there were significantly fewer patients driving in the education cohort as compared to the control cohort. There was not a significant difference in mean 2-week post-operative VAS pain score, mean 5 weeks post-operative VAS pain score, mean number o...

Factors associated with daily use of benzodiazepines/tranquilizers and opioids among people who use drugs
CONCLUSIONS AND SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: Clinicians working with PWUO or who prescribe BZDs or opioids should screen patients who use cocaine or synthetic cannabinoids, have low level of educational attainment, or recently accessed mental health services, as these patients may be at higher risk for daily co-use of BZD/TRQ and opioids, and therefore lethal overdose.PMID:37717256 | DOI:10.1111/ajad.13483

Revisiting the academic self-concept transcultural measurement model: The case of Spain and China
CONCLUSION: These two differences may be behind the difficulty in finding invariance using SEM models. It is a question of the construct's nature, less related to analytical phenomena, and deserves deeper discussion.PMID:37715352 | DOI:10.1111/bjep.12635

School-based supplementation with iron-folic acid or multiple micronutrient tablets to address anemia among adolescents in Burkina Faso: a cluster-randomized trial
CONCLUSIONS: Results do not provide strong evidence that weekly IFA or daily MMS supplementation alone is effective, but supplementation may play a role in addressing adolescent anemia if combined with co-interventions. Additional research is required to determine the best strategy to address anemia.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRY: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04657640 TRIAL REGISTRATION: Clinicaltrials.gov Identifier: NCT04657640, registered December 8, 2020.PMID:37716443 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajcnut.2023.09.004

Risk of suicide and religious or spiritual beliefs in Brazilian adult patients with epilepsy
DISCUSSION: A high number of patients with epilepsy exhibited suicide risk, with epilepsy-related variables, the presence of anxiety, and perceived lower belongingness and social support from religiosity or spirituality anxiety being associated with a higher risk. The social support provided by religiosity/spirituality may be a non-clinical factor associated with suicidal behavior. Suicide in epilepsy is associated with a complex interaction of multidimensional factors.PMID:37716329 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2023.109414

Co-production of online educational resources for adolescent and young adult females with epilepsy
CONCLUSION: Our team utilized co-production with a diverse group of partners to create educational materials that met the interests of adolescent and young adult females with epilepsy. This is a structured and reproducible methodology that could inform future educational intervention development in epilepsy.PMID:37716326 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2023.109420

A Model of the Home Literacy Environment and Family Risk of Reading Difficulty in Relation to Children's Preschool Emergent Literacy
This study extends the research on the preschool home literacy environment (HLE) in the context of the family risk (FR) of reading disability (RD) by examining a multiple-deficit model of RD. A total of 1171 six-year-old children were assessed at school entry, the onset of formal reading instruction in Norway. Their parents completed a questionnaire regarding their own RD, education, and the HLE. The final sample after applying the inclusion criteria was 794 children and their parents. The findings suggest, first, that two HLE factors (access to print and reading-related activities) should be distinguished rather than trea...

Constructing Residential Histories in a General Population-Based Representative Sample
Am J Epidemiol. 2023 Sep 15:kwad188. doi: 10.1093/aje/kwad188. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTResearch on neighborhoods and health typically measures neighborhood context at a single point in time. However, neighborhood exposures accumulate over the life course, influenced by both residential mobility and neighborhood change, with potential implications for estimating the impact of neighborhoods on health. Commercial databases offer fine-grained longitudinal residential address data that can enrich life course spatial epidemiology research and validated methods for re-constructing residential histories from these databases ...

Evaluation of a pilot to introduce simulated learning activities to support speech and language therapy students' clinical development
CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: Student experience of simulation was positive. One of the key elements students found to support their clinical skills was the importance of the safe space; support for learning instead of correction led them to engage in active learning. Key barriers to simulation related to having sufficient prior knowledge, the skills of the facilitator, group size and the wider learning landscape of the programme. In response to this pilot, there are plans to continue developing this model of simulation and embed simulation across the programme, led by a sound pedagogical approach with clear preparation and ...

Elevated CRP and TNF- α levels are associated with blunted neural oscillations serving fluid intelligence
DISCUSSION: Elevated inflammatory markers such as CRP and TNF-α were associated with aberrant neural oscillations in regions important for Gf. Linking inflammatory markers with regional neural oscillations may hold promise in identifying mechanisms of cognitive and psychiatric disorders.PMID:37716379 | DOI:10.1016/j.bbi.2023.09.012

Adoption of nanoparticle micro-infusion valve in venous port access for tumor patients and self-care analysis
Cell Mol Biol (Noisy-le-grand). 2023 Jul 31;69(7):91-97. doi: 10.14715/cmb/2023.69.7.15.ABSTRACTIt aimed to discuss the adoption of nanoparticle micro-infusion valves in the totally implantable venous access port (TIVAP) of tumor patients and analyze the self-care of patients after surgery. A total of 189 tumor patients who received TIVAP chemotherapy were selected from the day chemotherapy outpatient department of the Second People's Hospital of Lianyungang City from June to October 2021. The questionnaire survey was conducted to collect and analyze the general information about the patients and the patient's self-care ab...
