Racial/Ethnic Differences in Expectations Regarding Aging Among Older Adults.
This study uses baseline demographic, age-expectation, social, and health data from 229 racial/ethnic minority seniors in a stroke-prevention intervention trial. Unadjusted regression models and pair-wise comparisons tested for racial/ethnic differences in age-expectations, overall, and across domain subscales (e.g., physical-health expectations). Adjusted regression models tested whether age-expectations differed across racial/ethnic groups after controlling for demographic, social, and health variables. Regression and negative binomial models tested whether age-expectations were consistently associated with health and we...

Online assessment of risk factors for dementia and cognitive function in healthy adults
ConclusionKnown modifiable risk factors for dementia are associated with cognitive performance in non‐demented individuals in late midlife and older age. This provides further support for public health interventions that seek to manage these risk factors across the lifespan.

Alcohol Use and Frailty Risk among Older Adults over 12 Years: The Health and Retirement Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that moderate alcohol use confers reduced frailty risk for both older men and women. Future research should examine the mechanism(s) relating alcohol consumption and frailty. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Findings support extant literature suggesting some healthcare benefits may be associated with moderate drinking. PMID: 28990855 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Subjective Social Status Predicts Late-Life Memory Trajectories through Both Mental and Physical Health Pathways
Conclusion: Results provide preliminary behavioral evidence for the deleterious effects of social stress on cognitive aging. These results may help inform the development of policies and interventions to reduce cognitive morbidity among older adults who perceive a low position on the social hierarchy.Gerontology

Related factors of cognitive impairment in community-dwelling older adults in Beijing Longitudinal Study of Aging.
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of cognitive impairment among the older adults in Beijing was high. More attention should be paid to the identification of and intervention for factors influencing cognitive impairment, and health education should be carried out to improve the quality of life of the older adults. Right hippocampus atrophy is independently associated with Alzheimer's disease with psychosis
ConclusionWe found that more severe hippocampal atrophy is associated with AD+P than with AD −P. In addition, atrophy of the right hippocampus remained significant among AD+P after adjustment for frontal volume. These findings suggest that right hippocampal atrophy is independently associated with AD+P.

The 12-Word Philadelphia Verbal Learning Test Performances in Older Adults: Brain MRI and Cerebrospinal Fluid Correlates and Regression-Based Normative Data
Conclusion: The PVLT appears sensitive to markers of neurodegeneration, including temporal regions affected by AD. Conversely, in cognitively normal older adults, PVLT performance seems to relate to white matter disease and axonal injury, perhaps reflecting non-AD pathways to cognitive change. Enhanced normative data enrich the clinical utility of this tool.Dement Geriatr Cogn Disord Extra 2018;8:476 –491

2019 Alzheimer's disease facts and figures
This article describes the public health impact of Alzheimer's disease (AD), including incidence and prevalence, mortality and morbidity, use and costs of care, and the overall impact on caregivers and society. The Special Report examines the use of brief cognitive assessments by primary care physicians as a tool for improving early detection of dementia. An estimated 5.8 million Americans have Alzheimer's dementia. By mid-century, the number of people living with Alzheimer's dementia in the United States may grow to 13.8 million, fueled in large part by the aging baby boom generation. In 2017, official death certificates ...

Gender differences in presentation of behavioral and psychological symptoms in Alzheimer's disease in Taiwan.
CONCLUSIONS: The presentation of delusion and disinhibition in BPSD is associated with the female gender and staging of AD. Disinhibition was not necessarily associated with late stage of AD. PMID: 30912669 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Blood amyloid levels and risk of dementia in the Ginkgo Evaluation of Memory Study (GEMS): A longitudinal analysis
We examined baseline plasma β-amyloid (Aβ) levels in relationship to incident dementia during a period of 8.5 years in 2840 subjects age>75 years; 2381 were cognitively normal (CN) and 450 mild cognitive impairment.ResultsIncreased plasma Aβ1-40 and Aβ1-42 levels were associated with gender (women), age, low education, creatinine levels, history of stroke, and hypertension. CN participants who developed dementia had lower levels of Aβ1-42 and Aβ1-42/Aβ1-40 ratio compared with those who did not. Aβ levels did not predict dementia in mild cognitive impairment participants.DiscussionThere was an inverse association b...

133 Prospective Audit of Adherence to Current Guidelines for Urinary Catheterisation on a Dedicated Geriatric ward in a Tertiary Hospital
ConclusionAlthough this audit represents a small cohort, the results demonstrate a high rate of urinary catheter insertion without adequate indication. This audit should be repeated using a larger sample size. Appropriate education at ward level and with admitting NCHDs about: appropriate catheterisation practice should be performed with a view to re-auditing subsequently. Update of current guidelines is warranted.

308 Association of Diabetes and Frailty with Mortality in Middle-Aged and Older Europeans
ConclusionFrailty and pre-frailty are independent risk factors for mortality in diabetics. The identification of frailty is important for the risk-stratification and management of middle aged and older patients with diabetes and should be included in the routine assessment of these high-risk individuals.

263 An Audit of Patient Medication Lists in the Outpatient Setting
ConclusionThis audit shows that roughly one third of patients do not bring up-to-date lists of medications to their outpatient appointments and only a small proportion of patients feel that they themselves have the most up-to-date list of their own medications. Suggested areas for improvement include patient education campaigns, reminder letters/text messages to patients prior to their clinic appointments and the introduction of a Clinical Pharmacist to the outpatient setting.

Association of Race and Major Adverse Cardiac Events (MACE): The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Cohort.
Conclusions: No association between race and MACE was identified after adjusting for high cholesterol, diabetes, and hypertension, suggesting that comorbidities are major determinants of MACE; medical intervention with focus on lifestyle and health management could ameliorate the development of MACE. Further studies are needed to confirm this observation. PMID: 32280543 [PubMed]

Does Low Subjective Social Status Predict Cognitive Decline in Chinese Older Adults? A 4-Year Longitudinal Study From Hong Kong
CONCLUSION: Cognitive decline is influenced by self-perceived rank in proximal reference groups rather than socioeconomic comparison with society at-large. SSS-Community is a useful, single-item supplementary instrument to improve prediction of cognitive decline in elderly Chinese.PMID:33563520 | DOI:10.1016/j.jagp.2021.01.014
