Depressive Symptoms Are Associated with Reduced Cardiac Function Among Hispanics: Results from the PREVENCION Study
ConclusionsIn the PREVENCION sample tested, depressive symptoms were independently associated with cardiac function among Hispanic adults, even above and beyond pertinent factors such as demographic factors, cardiovascular risk factors, and comorbidities. Future studies should determine whether depressive symptoms are prospectively associated with systolic dysfunction, and examine the bio-behavioral pathways of this association.

A significant risk factor for poststroke depression: the depression-related subnetwork.
CONCLUSION: The present study provides, to our knowledge, the first graph theoretical analysis of white matter networks linked to poststroke major depression. These findings provide new insights into the neuroanatomical substrates of depression that develops after stroke. PMID: 25871495 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Are Depressive Symptoms Associated With Cardiovascular Mortality Among Older Chinese: A Cohort Study of 64,000 People in Hong Kong?
CONCLUSION:: Depressive symptoms were independently associated with higher CHD mortality in older Chinese men, and with higher stroke mortality in both genders. However, attenuation by health status, and lack of consistency by gender indicate that these associations could be noncausal and further studies by treatment trials and Mendelian randomization are needed. Harnessing the Four Elements for Mental Health
DiscussionAs detailed above, the “elements” in both a classical and a contemporary sense have effects on our mental health and are potentially modifiable aspects that can be harnessed as therapeutic interventions. The most robust interventional evidence currently available shows tentative support for several use of the elements via horticultural and nature-exposure therapy, green exercise/physical activity, sauna and heat therapy, balneotherapy, and breathing exercises. It should be noted that, in many cases, these interventions were not studied in definitive diagnosed psychiatric disorders and thus it is pre...

Sociodemographic, psychiatric and somatic risk factors for suicide: a Swedish national cohort study.
CONCLUSIONS: All psychiatric disorders, COPD, cancer, spine disorders, asthma, stroke, diabetes, ischemic heart disease and specific sociodemographic factors were independent risk factors for suicide during 8 years of follow-up. Effective prevention of suicide requires a multifaceted approach in both psychiatric and primary care settings, targeting mental disorders (especially depression), specific somatic disorders and indicators of social support. Prevalence and Clinical Predictors of Cognitive Impairment in Individuals Aged 80 Years and Older in Rural China.
Conclusions: The observed raw prevalence of CI was 73.2%. Female gender and a history of a previous stroke increased the risk of CI, while a higher educational level and engagement in social activities reduced the risk of CI. © 2013 S. Karger AG, Basel. White Matter Microstructural Integrity Is Associated with Executive Function and Processing Speed in Older Adults with Coronary Artery Disease.
CONCLUSION: These results suggest that WM microstructural integrity may be an important neural correlate of executive function even in cognitively intact CAD patients. This study suggests WM damage may be relevant to subtle cognitive decline in a population that may have early neural risk for dementia. PMID: 25499674 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

10-year trajectories of depressive symptoms and risk of dementia: a population-based study
We examined a cohort of participants who were free from dementia, but had data for depressive symptoms from at least one examination round in 1993–95, 1997–99, or 2002–04. We assessed depressive symptoms with the validated Dutch version of the Center for Epidemiology Depression Scale (CES-D) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Depression. We used these data to identify 11-year trajectories of depressive symptoms by latent class trajectory modelling. We screened participants for dementia at each examination round and followed up participants for 10 years for incident dementia by latent trajectory from the th...

Pulse Pressure Is Associated With Early Brain Atrophy and Cognitive Decline: Modifying Effects of APOE- ε4.
Pulse Pressure Is Associated With Early Brain Atrophy and Cognitive Decline: Modifying Effects of APOE-ε4. Alzheimer Dis Assoc Disord. 2016 Jul-Sep;30(3):210-5 Authors: Nation DA, Preis SR, Beiser A, Bangen KJ, Delano-Wood L, Lamar M, Libon DJ, Seshadri S, Wolf PA, Au R Abstract We investigated whether midlife pulse pressure is associated with brain atrophy and cognitive decline, and whether the association was modified by apolipoprotein-E ε4 (APOE-ε4) and hypertension. Participants (549 stroke-free and dementia-free Framingham Offspring Cohort Study participants, age range=55.0 to 64.9 y) underwent...

Association of parental death and illness with offspring suicidal ideation: cross-sectional study in a large cohort of university students
ConclusionsStudents who experienced parental death and common parental illnesses were at risk of reporting suicidal ideation, especially if their family were perceived as an important source of support. As information on parental death or illness can be routinely collected during health visits, attention should be paid to students reporting such experiences.

Incidence and risk factors of post-stroke cognitive impairment in convalescent elderly patients with first-episode acute ischemic stroke
In conclusion, the incidence of PSCI in elderly AIS patients was relatively high and related to the several factors, which indicated that more attention should be paid for such patients to prevent PSCI.PMID:37043907 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajp.2023.103583
