Declines In Dementia: Of Hearts And Minds
In this season when we are meant to be thankful, but when so many of us have had so many reasons to be otherwise, we have received a timely, welcome bit of universally good news. Rates of dementia in the United States appear to be declining.
This news reaches us courtesy of a study published recently in JAMA Internal Medicine. The investigators used standard, validated measures of cognitive function and dementia in two groups of more than 10,000 people in the U.S. with an average age of roughly 75 in the year 2000, and again in 2012. The overall rate of dementia declined over that span from 11.6% to 8.8%.

Medtronic wins FDA nod for CoreValve Evolut Pro
Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) said today it won FDA approval for its CoreValve Evolut Pro transcatheter arortic heart valve replacement designed for treating severe aortic stensosis.

CNS Summit 2016 Abstracts of Poster Presentations
Conclusion: Subjects with acutely exacerbated schizophrenia who were eligible for discharge from the inpatient setting and who completed the study demonstrated high rates of adherence using the mobile AI application. Subjects were able to easily use the technology. Use of the platform did not appear to increase the dropout rate. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using AI platforms to ensure high adherence, provide reliable adherence data, and rapidly detect nonadherence in CNS trials.

Study identifies gene — and drug target — involved in inflammation after injury
During a stroke or organ transplant, patients can suffer an injury due to lack of blood supply to vital organs. The injury — known as ischemia reperfusion — can cause damage to tissues. Scientists Restore Some Brain Activity in Recently Slaughtered Pigs
(NEW YORK) — Scientists restored some activity within the brains of pigs that had been slaughtered hours before, raising hopes for some medical advances and questions about the definition of death.
The brains could not think or sense anything, researchers stressed. By medical standards “this is not a living brain,” said Nenad Sestan of the Yale School of Medicine, one of the researchers reporting the results Wednesday in the journal Nature.
