Heart failure is independently associated with white matter lesions: insights from the population ‐based LIFE‐Adult Study
ConclusionsIn addition to age, hypertension, and stroke, the prevalence and duration of HF are independently associated with WML. This observation sets the stage to investigate the prognostic value of WML in HF and the impact of HF therapies on WML.

Risk factors and outcome of postoperative delirium after transcatheter aortic valve replacement
ConclusionsPatients with POD after TAVR are at increased risk for in-hospital mortality. However, after adjusting for postoperative events and comorbidities, stroke and bleeding, but not POD, are independent mortality predictors.

Sex-specific differences in outcome of transcatheter or surgical aortic valve replacement
Conclusions This nation-wide analysis of sex-specific outcomes after aortic-valve replacement procedures showed that women are higher-risk for bleeding, but lower-risk for stroke, mechanical ventilation, and TF-TAVR mortality. Understanding these differences and their basis may help improve outcomes. Teaser We analyzed baseline characteristics and outcomes of all isolated TAVR or SAVR procedures performed in Germany between 2011 and 2014. In comparison to male patients, females were preferentially treated with TF-TAVR rather than SAVR due to their generally older age and higher EuroSCORE. Females suffered from more relevan...

Interventional occlusion of left atrial appendage in patients with atrial fibrillation. Acute and long-term outcome of occluder implantation in the LAARGE Registry
ConclusionsLAARGE, a prospective multicenter real-world and all-comer registry, is unique in its concept, as it is non-manufacturer sponsored and includes all commercially available devices. LAAO implantation is mainly performed in elderly, critically-ill patients with a history of bleeding. LAARGE demonstrates a favorable outcome at 1-year follow-up in terms of stroke/TIA (1.3%) and major bleeding (1.6%) while using a single APT in the vast majority of patients.

Temporal trends in the presentation of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular emergencies during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany: an analysis of health insurance claims
ConclusionsAdmission rates for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular emergencies declined during the pandemic in Germany, while patients ’ comorbidities and treatment allocations remained unchanged. Further investigation is warranted to identify underlying reasons and potential implications on patients’ outcomes.Graphic abstract

Impact of HAS-BLED Score on outcome after percutaneous left atrial appendage closure: insights from the German Left Atrial Appendage Occluder Registry LAARGE
ConclusionThe present data show that patients had similarly low rates of ischemic complications 1  year after LAA closure irrespective of the baseline bleeding risk. Higher HAS-BLED scores were associated with increased mortality due to higher age and more severe comorbidity of these patients.

GARFIELD-AF: risk profiles, treatment patterns and 2-year outcomes in patients with atrial fibrillation in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (DACH) compared to 32 countries in other regions worldwide
ConclusionsSimilarities and dissimilarities in AF management and clinical outcomes are seen in DACH and ORW. The increased use of NOAC was associated with a mismatch of risk-adapted anticoagulation (over-and-undertreatment) in DACH. Suboptimal control of INR requires educational activities in both regional groups. Higher rates of cardiovascular death in DACH may reflect the higher risk profile of these patients and lower rates of non-haemorrhagic stroke could be associated with increased NOAC use.Graphical abstract

Endovascular therapy in patients with internal carotid artery occlusion and patent circle of Willis
CONCLUSION: Patient characteristics and outcomes differ substantially between ICA-T, ICA-I, and ICA-E occlusions. These results warrant further studies on EVT in ICA-I and ICA-E patients.PMID:37491381 | DOI:10.1136/jnis-2023-020556

Trends in Antihypertensive Medication Use and Blood Pressure Control Among Adults With Hypertension in Germany.
CONCLUSIONS: Increased and improved antihypertensive use might be a main contributor to the decrease in BP observed in Germany in the last decade. However, there are still socio-demographic and health disparities in hypertension treatment and control. PMID: 25968124 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Design and rationale of the Edoxaban Treatment in routiNe clinical prActice for patients with Atrial Fibrillation in Europe (ETNA-AF-Europe) study
This study details the design of the Edoxaban Treatment in routiNe clinical prActice for patients with Atrial Fibrillation in Europe (ETNA-AF-Europe) study – a postauthorization observational study, which is part of the postapproval plan for edoxaban agreed with the European Medicines Agency. Methods The ETNA-AF-Europe study (Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT02944019) is a multicenter, prospective, observational study that enrolled 13 980 patients with atrial fibrillation treated with edoxaban from 852 sites across 10 European countries (Austria, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland,...

Comparative effectiveness of rivaroxaban versus a vitamin K antagonist in patients with renal impairment treated for non-valvular atrial fibrillation in Germany — A retrospective cohort study
ConclusionThe prescription of rivaroxaban in patients with NVAF and renal impairment was associated with a lower incidence of ischaemic stroke and intracranial haemorrhage versus phenprocoumon in patients without evidence of cancer.
