Impact of stroke on affective well-being: findings from a large longitudinal nationally representative study.
Conclusion: Panel regression models showed that the incidence of stroke was associated with a decline in positive affect in the total sample and in both sexes. As the general self-efficacy moderated this association, it may be beneficial to enhance self-efficacy and prioritize coping strategies among stroke survivals. Quality Assurance Measures and Mortality After Stroke –a Retrospective Cohort Study
CONCLUSION: Quality assurance measures are associated with lower mortality risk after stroke. The concentration of care in specially qualified institutions is associated with stronger effects than eQA alone.PMID:34730084 | DOI:10.3238/arztebl.m2021.0339

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 2796: Occurrence of No-Harm Incidents and Adverse Events in Hospitalized Patients with Ischemic Stroke or TIA: A Cohort Study Using Trigger Tool Methodology
k Michael Simon Adverse events (AEs)—healthcare caused events leading to patient harm or even death—are common in healthcare. Although it is a frequently investigated topic, systematic knowledge on this phenomenon in stroke patients is limited. To determine cumulative incidence of no-harm incidents and AEs, including their severity and preventability, a cohort study using trigger tool methodology for retrospective record review was designed. The study was carried out in a stroke center at a university hospital in the German speaking part of Switzerland. Electronic records from 150 randomly...

Causes of Death in Endovascularly Treated Patients with Acute Stroke INTERVENTIONAL
CONCLUSIONS: Cerebrovascular causes in patients with stroke play a major role in the intrahospital causes of death and reasons for palliation. Considering the large proportion of secondarily palliative–treated patients, reasons for palliation should be considered instead of causes of death to avoid concealment by, for example, life-terminating measures.

Prospective collection of blood plasma samples to identify potential biomarkers for the prehospital stroke diagnosis (ProGrEss-Bio): study protocol for a multicenter prospective observational study
This study will evaluate whether a single blood biomarker or a combination of biomarkers can distinguish patients with AIS and ICH from patients with stroke and SM in the early phase after symptom onset in the prehospital setting. In addition, the kinetics of blood biomarkers in AIS and ICH patients will be investigated. Our goal is to evaluate new ways to reliably diagnose stroke in the prehospital setting and thus accelerate the application of evidence-based therapies to stroke patients.

Incidence of Stroke in People With Diabetes Compared to Those Without Diabetes: A Systematic Review
Conclusion The considerable differences between results can partly be explained by differences in study designs, statistical methods, definitions of stroke, and methods used to identify patients with diabetes. The lack of evidence arising from these differences ought to be rectified by new studies. Mixtures of long-term exposure to ambient air pollution, built environment and temperature and stroke incidence across Europe
CONCLUSIONS: We observed increased HRs for stroke with exposure to PM2.5, NO2 and BC, lower levels of greenness and higher impervious surface in single and combined exposure models.PMID:37598594 | DOI:10.1016/j.envint.2023.108136

Prevalence of stroke in adults aged 40 to 79 years in Germany : Results of the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Adults (DEGS1).
Abstract In the German Health Interview and Examination Survey (DEGS1), data on the prevalence of physician-diagnosed stroke were collected from 2008 to 2011 in a representative population-based sample of 5,901 adults aged 40-79 years. The stroke prevalence in DEGS1 was compared with prevalence estimates from the German National Health Interview and Examination Survey 1998 (GNHIES98). The lifetime prevalence of stroke in adults aged 40-79 years is 2.9 % (women: 2.5 %; men: 3.3 %). In both sexes, the prevalence increases continuously with age, up to 6.3 % in women and 8.1 % in men 70-79 years old. More...

Penumbra (NYSE:PEN) today released results from the Promise real-world safety and efficacy study of its Penumbra System with ACE 68 and 64 reperfusion catheters as a treatment for patients with acute ischemic stroke, touting high rates of revascularization and low rates of all-cause mortality. Results were presented at the International Stroke Conference this week in Los Angeles. “We thank the Promise investigators for this important contribution to the growing body of global evidence supporting Adapt as a frontline approach for patients with acute ischemic stroke. The Promise study affirms our belief that the Penu...

Effects of chronic flexed wrist posture on the elasticity and crosssectional area of the median nerve at the carpal tunnel among chronic stroke patients.
CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that chronic flexed wrist posture may cause atrophy of the median nerve due to chronic compression after stroke and increase in the stiffness of the median nerve. PMID: 29400371 [PubMed - in process]

Impact of atrial fibrillation on in-hospital mortality of ischemic stroke patients and identification of promoting factors of atrial thrombi – Results from the German nationwide inpatient sample and a single-center retrospective cohort
Ischemic stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a well-recognized risk factor for ischemic stroke. We aimed to investigate the impact of AF on in-hospital mortality of ischemic stroke patients and to identify parameters associated with intra-cardiac thrombogenic material. Patients were selected by screening the nationwide sample for ischemic stroke by ICD-Code (I63), stratified for AF. In this cohort, the association between in-hospital deaths and AF was investigated. In a second study, we performed a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent transesophageal echoc...
