Egypt’s Poor Easy Victims of Quack Medicine
Many pharmacies and herbalists in Egypt prescribe their own 'wasfa' (secret drug or herbal elixir). Credit: Cam McGrath/IPSBy Cam McGrathCAIRO, Aug 10 2014 (IPS) Magda Ibrahim first learnt that she had endometrial cancer when she went to a clinic to diagnose recurring bladder pain and an abnormal menstrual discharge. Unable to afford the recommended hospital treatment, the uninsured 53-year-old widow turned to what she hoped would be a quicker and cheaper therapy. A local Muslim sheikh claimed religious incantations, and a suitable donation to his pocket, could cure the cancer. But when her symptoms persisted, Ibrahim cons...

Nephrologists as Educators: Clarifying Roles, Seizing Opportunities.
Abstract Nephrologists play an important role in providing medical education in a variety of settings, including the medical school classroom, nephrology consult service, outpatient clinic, and dialysis unit. Therefore, nephrologists interact with a variety of learners. In this article the current state of published literature in medical education in nephrology is reviewed. Eight attending roles are identified of the nephrologist as a medical educator in the academic settings: inpatient internal medicine service, nephrology inpatient consult service, inpatient ESRD service, outpatient nephrology clinic, kidney tra...

Debiotech, Fresenius partner to develop home dialysis tech
Swiss med device firm Debiotech and dialysis device developer Fresenius Medical said today they are partnering to develop home-usable peritoneal dialysis technologies. The companies said they aim to create a platform of dialysis machines that are lightweight and compact to allow patients to travel with the device and use them at home. The newly partnered companies added that they intended to develop an easy-to-pickup set of instructions for the devices to make them easier to adopt for new users. “This agreement represents an ideal synergy to help patients everywhere who suffer from end stage renal disease receive th...

African-Americans with End Stage Renal Disease in the Early Years of Kidney Transplantation.
DISCUSSION: An extensive search of the medical literature found very few papers about ESRD, dialysis, or renal transplant that mentioned the race of the patients before 1975. While the search did not reveal whether race was explicitly used in determining patient access to dialysis or transplant, the scant data that exist show that African-Americans disproportionately developed ESRD and were underrepresented in these early treatment populations. Transplant outcome data in the United States failed to include race demographics until the late 1970s. The Social Security Act of 1972 (PL 92-603) extended Medicare coverage to almo...

Infodemiology of renal diseases: a novel opportunity to investigate public global interest.
CONCLUSIONS: GT is a reliable tool in evaluating global interest for renal diseases in different geographical areas and temporal patterns. Although infodemiology represents a method for investigating the dissemination of information at a global level, our results suggest the need for increasing general population's interest for renal diseases especially, and move from simple interest to global awareness in the view of prevention strategies. Death review of children receiving medical care at home
CONCLUSIONS: Improvement of devices and correct guidance to caregivers may reduce the death rate in children receiving home medical care.IMPACT: Children receiving home medical care, such as tracheostomy care, mechanical ventilation, or tube feeding, need special attention to prevent unexpected death. In this population-based child death review, 6% of children received home medical care, and it was estimated that 1 of 100 children receiving home medical care died per year. One-quarter of the deaths could be preventable by caregiver education or development of devices.PMID:34239067 | DOI:10.1038/s41390-021-01606-3

Assessing Transplant Education Practices in Dialysis Centers: Comparing Educator Reported and Medicare Data.
CONCLUSIONS: While most educators inform new patients that transplant is an option, dialysis centers with higher wait-listing rates use multiple transplant education strategies. PMID: 26292696 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Prospects for Vascular Access Education in Developing Countries: Current Situation in Cambodia.
We report our activities training doctors on vascular access procedures at International University (IU) Hospital in Cambodia through a program facilitated by Ubiquitous Blood Purification International, a nonprofit organization that provides medical support to developing countries in the field of dialysis medicine. Six doctors from Japan have been involved in the education of medical personnel at IU, and we have collectively visited Cambodia about 15 times from 2010 to 2016. In these visits, we have performed many operations, including 42 for arteriovenous fistula, 1 arteriovenous graft, and 1 percutaneous transluminal an...

Medical adjuvant treatment to increase patency of arteriovenous fistulae and grafts
CONCLUSIONS: The meta-analyses of three studies for ticlopidine (an antiplatelet treatment), which all used the same dose of treatment but with a short follow-up of only one month, suggest ticlopidine may have a beneficial effect as an adjuvant treatment to increase the patency of AVFs and AVGs in the short term. There was insufficient evidence to determine if there was a difference in graft patency between placebo and other treatments such as aspirin, fish oil, clopidogrel, dipyridamole, dipyridamole plus aspirin, warfarin, sulphinpyrazone and GTN patch. The certainty of the evidence was low to moderate due to short follo...

The Culture of Education in a Large Dialysis Organization: Informing Patient-Centered Decision Making on Treatment Options for Renal Replacement Therapy.
Abstract Challenged by the observation that newly admitted dialysis patients were often unaware of their treatment options, Fresenius Medical Care, North America developed a program to improve information delivered to chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients prior to their need for renal replacement therapy. Six years ago, the Treatment Options Program (TOPs) was established utilizing a standardized approach to educate individuals with CKD Stages 3 and 4. The program education focuses on modality and vascular access options. A key component includes follow-up at predetermined intervals, offering additional educatio...

HMG CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) for people with chronic kidney disease not requiring dialysis.
Abstract BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the most frequent cause of death in people with early stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD), for whom the absolute risk of cardiovascular events is similar to people who have existing coronary artery disease. This is an update of a review published in 2009, and includes evidence from 27 new studies (25,068 participants) in addition to the 26 studies (20,324 participants) assessed previously; and excludes three previously included studies (107 participants). This updated review includes 50 studies (45,285 participants); of these 38 (37,274 participants) were met...
